Purpose of Position

Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots structured cabling systems for data, voice, and video communications, including fiber optic cabling for data transmission, under general supervision. Responsibilities include running and terminating cables, testing and troubleshooting connectivity issues, and ensuring all work complies with applicable wiring standards.

Essential Functions
  • Install, terminate, and test network cabling to support connectivity and infrastructure requirements.
  • Connect network components and configure network settings (e.g., Wireless Access points, switches, and phones).
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network connectivity issues that are reported through incidents and requests.
  • Assists in maintaining inventory of cabling and equipment, as well as documentation of network infrastructure.
  • Report, document, and collaborate with departments to resolve network-related issues and incidents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Vocational training, hands-on experience in network and/or fiber optic cable installation, or certification in structured cabling and fiber optics is preferred — or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Will be required to drive a university vehicle. Must be able to complete and submit the UTA Form CO-EHS-F101 Request for Review of Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) to have their driving record history checked and be clear to drive.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Network Cabling Installer (CNCI) or other certifications in structured cabling and fiber optics.
  • Experience with industry-standard tools such as cleavers, fusion splicer, and testing equipment.
  • Familiarity with local and national electric codes.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledgeable in network cabling and fiber optics practices, including reading technical documentation, wiring diagrams, and cabling standards.
  • Ability to safely lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs and use hand and power tools, ladders, and lift equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team, follow instructions, and pay attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze system components and assist in troubleshooting technical problems.
  • Skilled in communicating effectively, both orally and in writing, and applying policies and guidelines to daily tasks.
Work Schedule
  • Monday through Friday; 8:00am through 5:00pm
  • Required to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation, with after-hours responses as needed
