We're seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to oversee end-to-end payroll operations for a growing university environment. This is an excellent opportunity for a payroll professional who enjoys improving processes, ensuring compliance, and partnering across HR, Finance, and IT to deliver accurate, timely payroll.

In this hybrid leadership role, you'll manage payroll operations, supervise one direct report, and serve as the subject matter expert on payroll compliance, taxes, and Workday payroll processes.

What You'll Do
  • Manage the full bi-weekly payroll process, ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing.
  • Lead and develop a Payroll Specialist while driving continuous process improvements and strong internal controls.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations, wage and hour laws, and multi-state payroll requirements.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for payroll-related questions, audits, tax agencies, and external auditors.
  • Oversee payroll reconciliations, journal entries, general ledger accuracy, and year-end activities, including W-2 processing and tax reporting.
  • Manage payroll system functionality, troubleshoot Workday issues, and partner with HR, Finance, IT, and third-party vendors on system enhancements and integrations.
  • Administer payroll‑related benefit deductions and employer contributions through Workday, including open enrollment support and benefit vendor integrations.
  • Monitor compliance for remote employees working in multiple states, including tax registrations and state leave program requirements.
  • Maintain payroll policies, procedures, and documentation while ensuring adherence to best practices.
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive payroll experience, including multi-state payroll administration.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll taxes, wage and hour laws, payroll accounting, reconciliations, and internal controls.
  • Experience with payroll systems;
    Workday experience is highly preferred.
  • Strong Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Workday Payroll proficiency.
  • Spanish language skills are a plus.
