Job Description

Arlington County’s Public Library is seeking an innovative Cataloging and Metadata Librarian to join the Collections, Access & Technology’s Cataloging and Metadata Team. This position will work closely with colleagues to ensure our collections and services meet the needs of our community and to support the management of quality control of the cataloging and processing of all library materials ensuring all proper cataloging standards and procedures are followed.

Responsibilities

Specific duties include:

Performing original and copy cataloging in all formats;

Providing upkeep and maintenance of the library’s cataloging, authority control, receiving, and processing workflows;

Ensuring that print, non-print, and electronic resources are accessible to borrowers in the most timely and cost-effective manner possible;

Keeping abreast of emerging trends, innovations and best practices affecting library systems, catalogs and of methods of electronic resources management and metadata standards;

Coordinating database policies and procedures for the library system and performing database maintenance practices.

Incorporating new methods of leveraging technology for collecting, organizing, and providing access to library materials;

Supporting the cataloging and metadata needs of the Center for Local History; and

Supporting centralized donations, Donation Processing Team, and system-wide bookstore operations.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

Ability to use cataloging tools, such as Marc Edit, OCLC Connexion, LC Class Web, Koha;

Flexibility, knowledge, and dedication to the mission of the division and the library by making the collections accessible through an accurate and usable catalog;

Knowledge of integrated library systems and statistical analysis;

Knowledge of Aspen Discovery to implement changes and enhancements to the library databases; and

Understanding of typical collection development, acquisitions, and processing practices of a large library.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Library Science or Library & Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university; and

For this position, considerable experience providing library services with at least one year of working for a public library.

Please Note:

Employees may be hired up to the senior level which requires significant experience or may be hired at lower levels which requires considerable experience at the journey level and some experience at the entry level.

Desirables: The successful candidate will demonstrate experience in one or more of the following:

Library cataloging and acquisitions workflows, including the application of metadata standards and authority control practices such as Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), AACR2, MARC/MARC
21, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), OCLC, Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Classification (LCC), and the Library of Congress Name Authority File (LCNAF); and/or

Working with Integrated Library Systems (ILS) and Online Public Access Catalogs (OPACs)/discovery layers.

Experience with
Koha and Aspen Discovery is highly desirable.

Additional Information

Work location and hours of work: Part-time, 30 hours per week including some evening and weekend work. Actual work schedule is determined by the needs of the work location; assignment location could change over time.
