- Must have or be eligible for Virginia licensure.
- Hold a current, valid qualified or professional certification by the American Sign Language Teachers Association; or
- Hold a current, valid Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Level III Interpreting Certification or higher issued by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or
- Hold a current, valid Registry of Interpreters for Deaf certification at least one of the following:
Certification of Interpretation (CI), Certification of Deaf Interpretation (CDI), Reverse Skills Certification (RSC), or Comprehensive Skills Certification (CSC); or - Hold a current, valid National Association for the Deaf Level IV Certification or higher, and
- Earned a minimum of three semester hours of methods of teaching foreign languages at the elementary and secondary levels from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Dual endorsement in English as a Second Language and/or Special Education, or in any other content area, is preferred but not required.
- Experience teaching high school students.
- Experience teaching American Sign Language to students.
- Understanding of methodology of teaching foreign language at the secondary level.
- Experience developing and implementing ASL curriculum.
- Ability to work effectively as a team member with colleagues.
- Flexible, dependable and highly organized.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to teach ASL as a foreign language.
