We are seeking an adjunct instructor to teach a course on Controversies in Public Health for the LCWS program during the Spring 2027 semester. The ideal candidate has experience in public health and the nature of health inequality in Washington, DC.

Course Description

Public health has saved millions of lives, yet it often provokes deep disagreement about the role of government, personal freedom, and collective responsibility. Using the unique ecosystem of Washington, DC, this course explores key controversies, past and present, that reveal the complex interplay of science, policy, ethics, and culture. Through readings, debates, and DC-based experiences, students will explore the tradeoffs between protecting the public’s health, preserving individual liberty, and overcoming the types of systemic health inequities illustrated by the divide between the Northwest and Southeast quadrants of the city.

Skills & Qualifications

Position Requirements

  • Master's-level or higher degree in public health, public policy, or a relevant field
  • Undergraduate teaching experience OR at least ten (10) years of relevant professional experience
  • Pass a background check

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree
  • An understanding of the value of small, liberal arts colleges and universities
  • Ability to relate to students from a wide background of experiences
Course Dates
  • Spring 2027 Semester (Jan. 21 - Apr. 22) with plans to teach the course each spring semester
  • Taught weekly from 6:00 - 8:30 pm (day of the week to be determined)
Adjunct Stipend per semester

$4,800 per semester plus course development funds for the first semester taught

About LCWS

The Lutheran College Washington Semester (LCWS) is an academic, residential semester program in Washington, D.C. that provides undergraduate students from sixteen colleges and universities from around the country the opportunity to live, study, and intern in the nation's capital. Students studying with LCWS during the fall and spring semesters hold internships four full days per week, take two evening classes, and participate in weekly field trips and events.

The LCWS office and student housing facilities are in Rosslyn, Virginia, with easy access to public transit.
