Role Overview
USC’s Information Sciences Institute (ISI) seeks an ASIC/FPGA Research Engineer – Digital Design in Arlington, VA. The engineer will design front‑end digital circuits for advanced ASIC and FPGA prototypes that address national‑level research problems. Responsibilities include working in a fast‑moving research environment, collaborating with senior researchers, and demonstrating system prototypes.
Responsibilities- Implement digital designs using Verilog or VHDL for ASIC and FPGA-based prototypes.
- Support research efforts by developing technical solutions to novel problems.
- Collaborate closely with senior researchers and contribute to team efforts that transform ideas into prototypes.
- Document and support system implementation, and contribute to technical publications.
- Initiate the design, development, and implementation of new research projects.
- Investigate feasibility of applying scientific principles to potential inventions and products.
- Plan and execute applied research projects.
- Oversee staff and students as needed.
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related field.
- Bachelor’s degree with >3 years of industry experience or a Master’s degree.
- Successful experience creating digital designs with Verilog or VHDL.
- Solid understanding of computer architecture.
- Proficiency in scripting, revision control, and debugging/maintaining tools.
- Experience with FPGA-based design and front‑end bring‑up.
- Experience with design verification.
- Familiarity with agile hardware design methodologies.
- Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to give clear explanations.
- Preferred:
Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, C++, or Go and experience with Linux.
The position is funded by a contract or grant and may be subject to changes in funding. Termination due to funding change will provide one (1) month written notice. No severance benefits are provided; final paycheck includes pay for days worked and accrued/unused vacation. Unused sick days are not paid upon termination.
