Amazon is seeking a self‑starter to join the AWS Energy team in pioneering the future for data center utility power by developing and executing the strategy by which AWS delivers energy projects and partners with electric utilities and energy companies across the Americas. This individual will define the end‑to‑end power strategy for scaling and operating AWS’ diverse, low‑cost energy supply and manage multiple, large‑scale, technically complex power infrastructure projects across multiple geographies by facilitating close collaboration between internal and external stakeholders.
In this role, you will explore and discover new supply opportunities that deliver near‑term capacity while accelerating net‑zero carbon supply, converting them into tactically sound and executable energy projects to reduce energy capital and operating expenses. Internally, responsibilities include reporting status, risks, mitigations and successes to C‑level and VP leadership, and influencing cross‑functional partner teams. Externally, you will own utility interactions, coordinate real estate, engineering and planning teams, and contract with utilities, EPCs, and Owner’s Engineers to meet AWS’ needs.
Key requirements include a strong energy background and a proven track record of developing and delivering innovative energy projects. Experience with regulated electric utilities, medium and high voltage power infrastructure, tariffs and supply agreements is mandatory, as is the ability to negotiate and execute power supply contracts across AWS regions and create innovative supply structures that integrate renewable energy portfolios.
Key job responsibilities- Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive utilities strategy for AWS data centers in AMER regions.
- Manage multiple utilities, EPC and Owner’s Engineers to deliver MV and HV power infrastructure, including negotiations and contracting.
- Develop and execute energy strategies that leverage capital projects (grid connections, high‑voltage substations, energy storage, etc.) to reduce long‑term energy costs and manage capital budgets for electrical infrastructure and projects.
- Collaborate with the Amazon CFE/RE team to support strategic energy sourcing opportunities.
- Execute electricity supply contracts that create new clean energy capacity on the grid, reduce cost, minimize risk, and leverage opportunities that benefit Amazon.
- Manage a portfolio of complex energy projects.
- Collaborate with internal teams and regulated utilities to implement and manage projects to meet business timelines.
- Identify and develop innovative cost‑saving projects (capital and operational) and initiatives related to energy infrastructure and supply.
- Complete due diligence on in‑market opportunities and develop them into cost‑saving solutions for the business.
- Work with utility regulators to develop policies and guidelines that enable broader AWS strategies and objectives.
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical or business‑related field.
- 7+ years working in the utility/energy industry in a commercial/business development or technical role.
- 3+ years of power transaction or contracting experience in U.S. East (PJM & MISO) energy markets, performing financial models and analysis on rates and energy cost, negotiating interconnection agreements and related contracts with utilities and contractors.
- 2+ years managing multiple multi‑million‑dollar power infrastructure contracts with external stakeholders to drive projects to completion.
- Master’s degree or MBA in business, data science, public administration, finance, engineering, human resources or related field.
- Experience in project management, including resource planning, managing schedules, reporting project status and prioritizing tasks for multiple projects.
- Experience in data centers, infrastructure service providers, or related technology companies.
- Experience planning, engineering, developing or constructing substations or other 34.5 kV or greater energy infrastructure.
- Experience evaluating and implementing innovative infrastructure and operational strategies within the energy sector, such as energy storage, demand response, fuel cells, etc.
- Experience working directly with public utility commissions and other energy regulators.
