Commissioning Specialist (Contract-to-Hire)

Arlington, VA (Onsite / Field-Based with Travel)
Our client is seeking a Commissioning Specialist to support commissioning activities across new construction, renovation, and existing facility projects. This role offers a mix of onsite and office-based responsibilities and provides the opportunity to lead commissioning efforts from testing through system turnover. The Commissioning Specialist will help ensure facilities are safe, fully functional, and operating in alignment with design intent, performance requirements, and stakeholder expectations.
This position will be actively involved in utility infrastructure, mechanical and plumbing systems, building automation systems, and overall facility system performance. Projects may also include asset management and ongoing facility optimization initiatives.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and support commissioning activities from design phase through construction, acceptance, and turnover
- Perform and document functional performance testing, QA/QC inspections, and system verification
- Support equipment and system start-up activities to ensure operational readiness
- Coordinate with contractors, clients, engineers, and project stakeholders to resolve technical issues
- Review design documents, specifications, and submittals to support commissioning planning
- Develop and execute commissioning plans, test procedures, and checklists
- Validate building systems performance including mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and client controls
- Support TAB (Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing) review and field verification activities
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements
- Provide field reporting, issue tracking, and documentation throughout project lifecycle
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline, or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive commissioning experience, including:
- Utility infrastructure systems
- Mechanical and plumbing systems
- Building automation systems (client) / controls
- Building and facility systems/components
- Facility operations and maintenance experience
- Mission Critical experience is a plus
- Working knowledge of ASHRAE standards, NFPA codes, and TAB processes
- Strong understanding of mechanical testing and commissioning procedures
- U.S. Citizenship required
- Ability to travel up to 50%, including multi-week field assignments and potential long-term deployments
- Industry-recognized commissioning certification preferred
