Commissioning Specialist

We are seeking an experienced Commissioning Specialist for a contract-to-hire opportunity in Arlington, VA. This role is ideal for a seasoned commissioning professional who enjoys both field and office responsibilities while ensuring building systems operate safely, efficiently, and according to design intent.
The Commissioning Specialist will lead and perform commissioning activities for new construction, renovation, existing building commissioning, and asset management projects. This position works closely with project stakeholders, contractors, and clients to deliver high-quality commissioning services that maximize operational performance, system reliability, and energy efficiency.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and execute commissioning activities for commercial, industrial, and mission-critical facilities.
- Develop and implement commissioning plans, procedures, and project documentation.
- Perform and oversee equipment startup, system verification, and functional performance testing.
- Conduct QA/QC inspections to verify systems are installed and operating according to design specifications.
- Coordinate with engineering, construction, facility operations, and contractor teams throughout all phases of commissioning.
- Identify deficiencies, recommend corrective actions, and verify successful resolution.
- Review project drawings, specifications, submittals, and sequence of operations.
- Prepare commissioning reports, issue logs, and project documentation.
- Support existing building commissioning and facility optimization initiatives.
- Participate in client meetings and provide technical guidance throughout project execution.
- Promote safe work practices while maintaining compliance with project and industry standards.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Building Systems, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive commissioning experience involving: utility infrastructure, electrical power distribution systems, low voltage systems, life safety systems, building mechanical and electrical systems, facility operations and maintenance.
- Working knowledge of ASHRAE commissioning guidelines, NFPA codes and standards, TAB (Testing, Adjusting & Balancing) processes, mechanical testing procedures and applicable building codes.
- Strong understanding of commissioning documentation, testing protocols, and system troubleshooting.
- Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- Ability to travel up to 50%, including multi-week field assignments and occasional extended project deployments.
- Experience supporting mission-critical/data center projects.
- Experience leading or participating in Level 4 and Level 5 Integrated Systems Testing (IST).
- Industry-recognized commissioning certification such as CxA, CCP, CBCP, or similar.
- Experience with building automation systems (Client), electrical systems, HVAC systems, and integrated building controls.
