Lateral Transfer Firefighter / EMT Position

Arlington County Fire Department (ACFD) is seeking experienced career firefighters and EMTs to join as lateral transfers. Eligible applicants receive competitive salary, step placement credit, and a comprehensive benefits package.

• Respond to emergency incidents throughout Arlington County, including fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, technical rescues, and airport-related incidents.
• Assist with special operations teams such as Hazmat, Technical Rescue, Swift Water Rescue, and Bomb Squad.
• Perform fire prevention duties, conduct public education programs, and engage in community outreach.

• Prior experience as a firefighter or EMT with at least 12 months separation from ACFD if previously employed.
• Certifications required:
  Firefighter II, EMT, Advanced Life Support (ALS) technician.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the county.

Lateral hires receive step placement credit on a one‑for‑one basis for each qualifying year of prior service, up to a maximum of 10 years, minus one year. This applies to Fiscal Year 2027 (June 29, 2026 – June 27, 2027).

• Up to $15,000 bonus available: $5,000 for previous ACFD employment within 3 years at least 12 months separation; $10,000 for certified Firefighter II and EMT; $15,000 for certified Firefighter II and ALS technician.
