Job Overview
The Arlington County Transit Bureau, in partnership with Transdev, is seeking a detail-oriented and technically proficient Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Specialist to support the development, integration, ongoing performance, and maintenance of intelligent systems within the public transit network. This role serves as a critical link between Operations, Technology, and Planning, ensuring that transit services remain efficient, safe, reliable, accessible, and data-driven.
The ITS Specialist will act as a key technical resource, supporting the integration and optimization of transportation technologies such as CAD/AVL systems, real-time passenger information signage, Automatic Passenger Counters (APC), and other advanced transit technologies.
- Salary: $64,000.00 – $90,000.00
- Vacation: minimum 2 weeks
- Sick days: 5 days

- Implement, monitor, and maintain ITS applications (CAD/AVL, APC, real‑time information systems, digital signage).
- Plan, procure, implement, and manage life‑cycle of ITS projects.
- Coordinate with vendors, internal departments, and external partners for project delivery.
- Collect, analyze, and report ITS data to support service planning, performance monitoring, and operational efficiency.
- Provide end‑user training and technical support to operators, dispatchers, supervisors, and other staff.
- Ensure ITS technologies comply with industry standards and cybersecurity requirements.
- Identify and evaluate emerging technologies and best practices; recommend upgrades or enhancements.
- Provide moderate technical support for staff inquiries regarding hardware, software, and mobile computing devices.
- Troubleshoot and resolve moderately complex hardware, software, and mobile computing issues.
- Collaborate with internal departments to diagnose and solve ITS issues.
- Escalate issues requiring additional attention to ensure timely resolution.
- Demonstrate proficiency in ITS‑related tools and technologies.
- Support fleet‑wide hardware refreshes, including infrastructure upgrades such as modems/routers for the fixed‑route fleet.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external partners/customers.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and project management skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong problem‑solving skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in Transportation Planning, Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies, systems, and processes in an evolving public transit environment.
- Proficient computer knowledge in Windows environment; excellent Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook skills.
- Clear communication in English (read, speak, write, understand).
- Availability to work standard business hours with occasional weekends and overnight hours.
- Fluency in Spanish or additional languages.
- At least 1 year of hands‑on experience and working knowledge in ITS technology, devices, and equipment in a public transportation setting.
- Experience with transit software platforms and technical data specifications (e.g., Swiftly, Clever Devices, Spare, Remix, GTFS, GTFS‑RT).
- Ability to work shifts or flexible schedules as needed.
- Long periods of sitting, typing, or computer screen use.
- Work environment includes both indoor and outdoor settings.
