OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Senior Director, Humanitarian Legal Services, Senior Attorney for Immigration Pro Bono Training & Technical Assistance (TTA) is responsible for building the knowledge, skill, and confidence of pro bono attorneys who provide legal representation to immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. This role leads the development of immigration law trainings, provides ongoing consultation on complex case matters, and ensures high-quality, trauma-informed legal services through technical assistance and quality control.

The Senior Attorney serves as the organization’s subject‑matter expert on immigration law, trains volunteer attorneys on case types such as asylum, SIJS, TPS, VAWA, family‑based petitions, humanitarian relief, and work authorization, and supports volunteers throughout the lifecycle of their cases.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design, implement, and regularly update training curricula for pro bono attorneys, including introductory, intermediate, and advanced‑level modules
  • Conduct live training sessions (virtual and in‑person) on relevant practice areas, case procedures, ethical obligations, trauma‑informed lawyering, and organizational processes
  • Create written training materials, such as manuals, checklists, templates, sample filings, practice advisories, and video tutorials
  • Serve as the primary expert resource for pro bono attorneys seeking guidance, provide one‑on‑one case consultations, document review, and substantive feedback as necessary
  • Monitor cases handled by pro bono attorneys, ensuring adherence to best practices, quality standards, and ethical obligations
  • Develop and maintain quality‑control systems for volunteer legal work, including peer review tools, case checklists, and feedback surveys
  • Track and analyze training and TTA needs to continuously refine support strategies
  • Support the evaluation of pro bono case outcomes
  • Contribute to program reporting for grants, leadership, and compliance
  • Maintain a manageable caseload of complex or high‑impact cases to stay current on legal developments and model best practices
  • Monitor and disseminate updates in relevant legal areas (e.g., immigration relief, humanitarian protections, family law, or other practice areas depending on organizational mission)
  • Contribute to organizational policy analysis, practice advisories, and legal research initiatives; and
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Director (or Associate Director)

REQUIREMENTS
  • J.D. with a valid license to practice law in the United States
  • Minimum 5-7 years of immigration law experience; preferred experience working with pro bono programs or volunteer attorneys
  • Demonstrated experience training, mentoring, or supervising attorneys, including those new to immigration law
  • Bilingual or multilingual ability is a plus
  • Program and grant management experience, grant writing experience preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong writing and demonstrated intercultural communication ability
  • Experience supervising attorneys, volunteers or interns
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software and database programs. Proficiency in CRM or volunteer management database
