The Director of Accounting will lead and oversee all operations accounting activities related to the development of new solar farm projects. This individual will ensure accurate accounting, controls, and reporting for Construction in Progress (CIP), development spend, and operational support functions, while serving as the senior accounting leader for Accounts Payable and payroll approval processes. The Director will partner closely with Development, Project Management, Finance, and Executive Leadership to support timely decision-making and project execution.
Key Responsibilities Development & CIP Accounting- Own accounting for solar development and construction activities from early-stage development through commercial operation
- Oversee Construction in Progress (CIP) accounting, including capitalization policies, cost classification, and asset roll-forward schedules
- Ensure proper tracking, reconciliation, and reporting of development and construction costs by project
- Coordinate CIP closeout and asset placement into service upon project completion
- Ensure compliance with the Accounting rules, internal accounting policies, and external audit requirements
- Direct the PO creation, processing, and approval workflow for development and construction spend
- Establish and enforce approval controls, delegation of authority, and documentation standards
- Oversee invoice review and approval, ensuring accuracy, proper coding, and alignment with contracts and POs
- Resolve invoice discrepancies in collaboration with Procurement, Development, and vendors
- Prepare and oversee reporting on development project status, including budget vs. actual spend, committed costs, and forecasted expenditures
- Provide clear visibility into project financial health, risks, and timing
- Support internal management reporting, executive updates, and investor or lender reporting as needed
- Partner with FP&A on forecasting, cash flow planning, and long-range development modeling
- Serve as Director of Accounts Payable for the business
- Lead and manage the AP team, processes, and systems
- Ensure timely, accurate processing of vendor payments while maintaining strong internal controls
- Drive continuous improvement in AP efficiency, automation, and scalability
- Review and approve payroll for accuracy, completeness, and compliance
- Coordinate with HR and Payroll teams on compensation changes, bonuses, and special payments
- Ensure proper accounting and reconciliation of payroll expenses
- Design and maintain strong internal controls across development accounting, AP, and payroll
- Support internal and external audits, including preparation of schedules and audit responses
- Ensure compliance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and best practices
- Manage, mentor, and develop accounting staff within operations and AP
- Act as a key accounting partner to Development, Engineering, Procurement, Legal, and Finance teams
- Support system implementations and process enhancements related to project accounting and AP
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred)
- 10+ years of accounting experience, including leadership roles
- Strong experience with project accounting, CIP, and fixed asset capitalization
- Knowledge of GAAP and internal controls
- Experience leading Accounts Payable and payroll approval processes
- Advanced Excel skills; ERP experience required (Oracle Fusion a strong plus)
