On-Call Archaeologist

Staff Archaeologists support a variety of projects across Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia, and surrounding regions, providing cultural resource management for commercial clients.

Staff Archaeologists will work part‑time, on‑call (1–20 hours per week, no benefits). The role may transition to full‑time after demonstration of performance. The position requires compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), and applicable state regulations. Frequent travel and the ability to work 8–10 hour days in varying field conditions are essential.

Candidates must have a high awareness of workplace safety.

• At least a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or Cultural Resource Management
• Minimum of two years of professional archaeological field work experience
• Experience in construction monitoring and collaboration with tribal monitors
• Basic knowledge of historic preservation laws and policies, including NEPA, NHPA, ARPA, NAGPRA, and state regulations
• Experience using GPS technologies (EOS, Field Map, Survey
  123, etc.)
• Basic soil identification
• Proficiency identifying features and artifacts (precontact ceramics, flaked stone, ground stone, diagnostic historic artifacts)
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to walk long periods on rugged terrain, excavate shovel tests, screen soil, and carry field equipment
• Willingness and ability to travel frequently and for long periods as required
• Motivation to work safely with minimum supervision
• Experience and comfort working independently in the field and office

• Experience in or near Washington, D.C.
• Experience leading field crews
• Experience conducting research, literature reviews, and cartographic reviews
• Experience writing compliance reports and completing site forms
• Background in the consulting environment
• Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and respond to internal and external clients
• HAZWOPER certification
• OSHA‑10 certification

The hourly rate will be based on a base salary range of $70,900.00 to $, adjusted for work location and individual factors. Benefits include access to a 401(k) plan and legally mandated benefits.
