Research Intern – Analysis of Reef Fish Video and Audio Recordings

We seek a dedicated and intellectually engaged Research Intern to join our team to analyze natural history videos and sound recordings for animal behavior patterns. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest and background in animal behavior, ichthyology, coral reef science, or marine biology. This role involves complex workflows using a combination of commercial and custom software, requiring a meticulous and detail-oriented individual.

The position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of techniques for fisheries and marine protected area monitoring and management and to participate in marine bioacoustic research.

• Analyze videos to identify and document patterns of fish sounds and behavior.
• Utilize technical software and adhere to complex workflows to ensure accurate data collection and analysis.
• Maintain detailed records of observations and findings.
• Participate in team meetings and contribute to the overall research goals.

• We are open to a variety of backgrounds. Among them are:
• Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program with a degree in Biology, Zoology, Marine Biology, or a related field. We will also consider applicants currently pursuing a relevant degree.
• Persons who have demonstrated a deep appreciation for fish behavior and identification. This person may have an unrelated educational background but robust technical skills.
• Ability to follow detailed instructions and work within complex workflows.
• Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Ability to work as part of a team.

• Knowledge of coral reef fish species and other marine life.
• Experience with video or audio editing software, especially Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve.
• Previous experience in bioacoustics or analyzing animal behavior with video.
• Interest in pursuing a career in conservation technology, marine biology, natural history film, or other relevant field.
• Proficiency in data analysis and experience working with large datasets.

• This is an on-site position requiring 40 hours of work per week. Work must be done onsite because of the requirements of the workstation and access to media.
• Working hours and days are flexible.
• The role involves extended periods of sitting and viewing video footage, sometimes with headphones.

On-Site – Arlington, Virginia

Job Type: Full-Time (40 hours per week)

Pay: $17-20/hr (Commensurate with experience)

Term:
This is a summer internship. Expected to last 8-12 weeks beginning on or after June 9th.
