Position: Campus Safety Officer I

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a deterrent to criminal events and acts as a protector of the campus community.
  • Enforces all University rules, regulations and policies and assists with actions regarding local, state and federal laws.
  • Maintains high visibility and patrols buildings, grounds and parking facilities to secure and protect University property.
  • Responds to emergencies and assists responding emergency services personnel; handles incidents, complaints, alarms, fires, vehicle crashes, disturbances, assaults, robberies and other requests for service on relevant campuses.
  • Files reports for crimes, rule and policy violations, property damage, suspicious activity, miscellaneous problems, or any other unusual incident or occurrence.
  • Monitors and assists with traffic and parking violations; may direct traffic as required and may move vehicles within restricted areas.
  • Maintains communications between officers, supervisors and the communications base while on duty via two-way radio, cellular telephone or other approved methods.
  • Locks and unlocks facilities and activates or deactivates alarms as scheduled and/or instructed.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Capable of enforcing all relevant policies and procedures as they pertain to the operation of a higher education campus safety department, and the ability to follow department policy and procedure and commands from shift supervisors and command staff.
  • Adheres to department policy and procedures including daily duties, patrols, investigations, report writing, personal performance and appearance, emergency management, and warnings/notifications.
  • Utilizes all equipment and software programs in accordance with Department and University use policies; equipment may include two-way radios, golf cart, smart and office phones, Google Office Suite, report writing software, access management systems, security cameras, and fire alarm systems.
  • Reviews all reports, emails, messages, and directives from the last duty shift. On assigned campus, lock and unlock University buildings as scheduled or by approved request.
  • Responds to emergencies and fire alarms; assists responding emergency services personnel; problem-solves a variety of issues (maintenance, technology, parking, access) and refers to the appropriate department; proactive foot and cart patrol of campuses.
  • Assists housing community assistants with student violations of housing policy, and performs well-being checks; provides safety and security for special events on campuses.
  • Provides community service and information (such as safety escorts and golf cart shuttles) to assist campus accessibility.
  • Monitors crime trends and reports findings to command staff to aid in developing crime prevention strategies; completes all required reports and daily activity logs.
  • Conducts field investigations and prepares thorough field reports of reported violations of University policy and state law; notifies appropriate University partners as directed.
  • Conducts follow-up interviews and investigations and creates corresponding reports as directed by shift supervisors and command staff. Ensures departmental records and incident reports are retained in accordance with records retention policies and law.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of duties to support emergency management, including university emergency plans, notification systems, and drills and exercises.
  • Completes all state and department-required training when assigned by supervisors or command staff.
  • Officers are expected to strive to continuously improve the delivery of department services to exceed community expectations.
Job Requirements
  • Education
    :
    High School graduate or GED required;
    Associate’s or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience
    : 1 year of experience in a higher education, law enforcement, or security department with familiarity of patrols, investigations, report writing, and community-oriented problem solving.
  • Licenses or Certifications
    :
    Campus Safety Officer Certification or ability to obtain certification within 6 months from Virginia DCJS;
    Basic First Aid and CPR preferred.

  • Special Knowledge
    :
    Ability to make critical safety decisions independently when no supervisor is available; knowledge of laws pertaining to Campus Safety (e.g., Clery, Title IX, FERPA).
