JOB SUMMARY

The Campus Safety Officer is expected to provide for the safety of students, faculty, staff; and to protect/secure University grounds, buildings, and parking facilities against theft, illegal entry, and damage.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serves as a deterrent criminal events and conduct as a protector of the campus community.
  • Enforces all University rules, regulations and policies as well as assisting with assisting with similar actions regarding local, state and federal laws.
  • Maintains high visibility and patrols buildings, grounds and parking facilities to secure and protect University property.
  • Responds to any emergency and assists all responding emergency services personnel during their respective responses; responds to all other incidents, complaints, alarms, fires, vehicle crashes, disturbances, assaults, robberies as well as any other requests for service on the relevant campuses.
  • Files reports for all crimes, rules and policy violations, damage to property, suspicious activity, miscellaneous problems, or any other unusual incident or occurrence.
  • Monitors and assists with traffic and parking rules and regulations violations; which may include the movement of vehicles within restricted area(s); may direct traffic as required.
  • Maintain communications contact between officers, supervisors and communications base while on duty via two-way radio, cellular telephone or other as approved and may be necessary.
  • Locks and unlocks all facilities and activates or deactivates alarms as scheduled and/or instructed.
  • Capable of enforcing all relevant policies and procedures as they pertain to the operation of a higher education campus safety department, and ability to follow department policy and procedure, and commands as given by designated shift supervisors, and command staff.
  • Adhere to department policy and procedures which includes but are not limited to: daily duties, patrol, investigations, report writing, personal performance and appearance, as well as emergency management, and warnings/notifications.
  • Utilize all equipment and software programs in accordance with Department and University use policy and procedures. Equipment and programs include but are not limited to: two-way radios, golf cart, smart and office phones, general office equipment, Google Office Suite (Gmail and Google Docs), report writing software, systems such as access management, security cameras, and fire alarm.
  • Review all reports, emails, messages, and directives from last duty shift. On assigned campus: lock and unlock University buildings as scheduled or by approved request.
  • Respond to emergency calls for service and fire alarms; assist responding emergency services personnel; problem solve a variety of issues (such as maintenance and technology issues, parking, and access) and refer to appropriate department; proactive foot and cart patrol of campuses;
  • Assist housing community assistants with student violations of housing policy, and well-being checks; provide safety and security for special events on campuses;
  • Provide community service and information (such as safety escorts and gold cart shuttles) to assist with campus accessibility;
  • Monitor crime trends and report findings to command staff to assist in development of crime prevention strategies; complete all required reports and daily activity logs.
  • Conduct field investigations and complete thorough and detailed field reports of reported violations of University policy and state law, and make necessary and directed notifications to appropriate University partners.
  • Conduct follow-up interviews, investigations, and create corresponding reports as directed by designated shift supervisors and command staff. Ensures that departmental records, incident reports, and relevant files and information obtained during course of duty are treated with utmost privacy, and/or retained in accordance with applicable records retention policies and law.
