Position: M26/27 MAINTENANCE MECHANIC II (CARPENTER)
Job Description

Human Resources announces an opening for a FTE Carpenter I/II, 1st shift. This is 260 day, grade M-08/M-09 position located at the Trades Center with the Maintenance Office.

NOTE regarding work schedule/shift assignment: schedule/shift is subject to change, depending upon the needs of APS. Applicant hired for a position in this class is hired for the position, not the work schedule or shift assignment. Once hired, an employee may be reassigned to another schedule or shift at the discretion of APS.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (May not include all duties performed; not all incumbents perform all essential functions delineated.)
  • Performs semiskilled to full journey-level maintenance, repair, and construction tasks in carpentry trade.
  • Confers with supervisor to learn nature of work assignments, and to advise or consult on crew assignments, equipment to be used,and materials to be obtained or purchased; may be authorized to order or purchase materials.
  • May direct and inspect work performed by crew, summer or vocational student workers, and/or community service workers;provides guidance and training as necessary.
  • Ensure all safety precautions, regulations and equipment are utilized appropriately, and that work complies with county building codes.
  • Participate in setup and cleanup of work site to ensure safe environment.
  • Review building plans and surveys and measures where construction or installation is to be performed to determine layout,quantity, size, and type of materials and equipment to be used and other preparation considerations.
  • Use hand and power tools, builds and/or installs wall or partition frames, bathroom stalls, platforms or ramps.
  • Cut wood, sheet rock, metal panels, or other materials to fit; construct walls or other surfaces; finish joins and sands to ensuresolid, even surface.
  • Measure and alter door and door openings to fit, construct door frames, install hinges, hang doors, install locks, glass and otherhardware, and perform necessary adjustments to ensure door is balanced and moves properly.
  • Lay out and constructs hanging ceiling grids, cut and install ceiling tiles.
  • Use chemicals or tools to prepare floors, cut and install floor tiles.
  • Use cabinetmaking skills and equipment, including power and hand tools and shop machinery to cut, construct, and repair woodenand metal furniture, framed display boards, lockers, and other building furnishings.
  • Sand or otherwise prepare and stain, seal, lacquer, or occasionally paint furniture and structural surfaces.
  • May work with educational staff and students to build specially adapted furniture for handicapped students.
  • Maintain records on work of crew and contractors, prepare emergency, safety, and problem reports.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair on tools and equipment.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES:
  • Strength and dexterity to perform all required tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy objects; assembling and disassemblingscaffolds and equipment; and operating or utilizing all tools, equipment and vehicles.
    • Work requires significant standing, bending, stooping, and working in tiring positions.
HAZARDS/UNUSUAL DEMANDS:
  • Work in a wide range of climatic conditions.
  • Exposure to dust, flammable or toxic chemicals, loud noise and vibrations, requires use of safety goggles, ear plugs, masks, safetyshoes, back braces, hard hats, and gloves.
  • Work involves climbing on ladders, scaffolds, and into high places.
  • May be required to work unusual hours.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions and to read and interpret plans, diagrams, drawings, prints, schematics, etc.
  • Ability to use arithmetic computations to measure, calculate quantities and costs, etc. and ability to maintain records.
  • Ability to develop and maintain good leadership and interpersonal relationships.
QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION:
  • High school diploma, including some courses in industrial arts and/or shop mechanics, and a combination of training equivalent to an apprenticeship in carpentry, and some responsible work in the carpentry or related trades at the lead level.
