Position: M26/27 GROUNDS MECHANIC
Job Description

Human Resources announces an opening for a 1.0 FTE Grounds Mechanic I/II, 1st Shift. This is 12-months, Grade M-8/9 position located at the Trades Center with the Maintenance Office.
NOTE regarding work schedule/shift assignment:
The work schedule and shift are subject to change, depending upon
the needs of APS. applicant hired for a position in this class is hired for the position, not the work schedule or shift
assignment. Once hired, an employee may be reassigned to another schedule or shift at the discretion of APS.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (the following may not include all duties performed):
Uses sheet metal and/or wrought iron to fabricate parts for projects.
Trims and prunes shrubbery and trees using power and hand tools, operates tractors, backhoes and other vehicles
to remove brush and grade and prepares grounds for seeding; seeds and plants shrubs, flowers, etc.; cuts up and
removes fallen trees; and performs other landscape maintenance duties. Installs, repairs and replaces playground
equipment, both indoor and outdoor basketball goals, and other sports and recreation equipment; spreads sand or
wood chips.
Operates jackhammers, bobcats, asphalt rollers, asphalt and concrete mixers, to grade and prepare sites, prepare
asphalt or concrete, and install or repair roads, sidewalks, shed pads, etc.
Digs ditches, post holes and other excavations, using backhoe and other powered or hand tools and equipment,
and removes broken pipes, install signs or post, and prepares ground for work by, others trades mechanics.
Lays or assists other mechanics in laying bricks, blocks, and tiles to construct walls and flooring, operates power
cutting tools to cut door and window spaces.
Moves furniture, equipment and supplies to and from school buildings.
Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES INCLUDE:
Good knowledge and ability to operate a broad range of construction and landscaping vehicles and power and hand
tools and equipment.
Good knowledge of the common procedures, materials, hazards and safety precautions associated with grounds
maintenance and construction activities, and ability to respond appropriately in hazardous situations.
Good knowledge of national, state and local codes and regulations applicable to this grade.
Ability to follow and give oral and written instructions, and to read and interpret plans, diagrams drawings, prints,
schematics, etc.
Ability to use arithmetic computations to measure, calculate quantities and cost, etc., and ability to maintain records.
Ability to develop and maintain good leadership and interpersonal relationships.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED:

Completion of high school), including some courses in Industrial arts and/or shop mechanics, and completion of
formal or on-the-job training equivalent to an apprenticeship in grounds maintenance and/or welding.
Considerable progression work in the grounds-keeping and construction trades; or any equivalent education and
experience to fully meet the requirements of the job.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:
Possession of an appropriate, valid vehicle operator's license; if required by assignment
A Commercial driver's license (CDL) is required to operate certain trucks and construction equipment. A CDL
license is preferred
Eligible for M-09 is preferred

NOTE:

All APS employees authorized to drive APS vehicles are subject to either the Omnibus Transportation Act
drug and alcohol procedures (if required to possess a CDL) or the Arlington Public School Alcohol and Drug testing
procedures (if CDL is not required).
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES:
Possession of the strength and dexterity and fine and gross motor skills to perform all required
tasks, including lifting and carrying heavy objects, assembling and dissembling scaffold and equipment, and operating
and/or utilizing all tools, equipment and vehicles endemic to the trade. Work requires significant standing, bending,
stooping, lifting, working in tiring positions and working from ladders or scaffolds. HAZARDS/UNUSUAL
DEMANDS:
Works in a wide range of climatic conditions, including severe snow and storm conditions. Exposure to
fumes, dust, sparks and smoke and to loud noise and vibrations requires use of safety goggles, ear plugs, masks, safety
shoes, back braces, welding shields, hard hats and gloves. Work involves climbing trees, ladders, scaffolds, and into other
high places. May be required to work unusual hours and be designated essential personnel in emergency situations.
