ADA Programs/Reasonable Accommodations Coordinator
Arlington County's Office of Human Rights seeks an experienced ADA Programs/Reasonable Accommodations Coordinator to oversee the County's ADA compliance and reasonable accommodations program, ensuring compliance with the ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. This role manages the interactive accommodation process for applicants and employees requiring disability, religious, or pregnancy accommodations and ensures accessibility to County programs, services, and activities through information, technical assistance, and accommodation coordination.
Strong knowledge of ADA Titles I and II and Section 504 is required; familiarity with Section 508 is preferred.
Specific duties include:
- Guiding, advising and training managers in the application of policies and procedures for ADA compliance and for accommodations for employees with disabilities;
- Interacting with senior agency officials, HR staff, and employees to implement accommodations;
- Administering, processing and recommending reasonable accommodations;
- Assisting the Executive Director in designing, developing, and updating related policies and procedures;
- Advising on architectural plans and providing technical assistance on new construction and renovations as needed or requested to ensure compliance;
- With oversight by the Executive Director, managing ADA audits and coordinating the development of corrective actions;
- Serving as a liaison to the Disability Advisory Commission and/or other commissions;
Coordinating with other County Departments to procure vendors for disability-related services; - Responding to information and assistance requests from residents and visitors on disability and access issues and making referrals to appropriate resources;
- Conducting and assisting in ADA Grievance investigations and disputes using established procedures; and
- Collaborating with the County Attorney's Office, as needed
The ideal candidate will have the ability to balance compliance, operational needs, customer service and experience with the following:
- Managing contracts;
- Public speaking and training;
- Supporting public bodies and commissions; and
- Employee relations and conflict resolution.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in rehabilitation programs, health, social services or public administration; and
Considerable experience working in the administration of programs related to persons with disabilities and in the interpretation and application of the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act in a public setting. Master's degree or higher in rehabilitation counseling, social services, or public administration preferredSubstitution: Additional qualifying experience and knowledge of disability processes, procedures, and laws from a medical, functional, and psychosocial specialty may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.
Additional education can be substituted for the experience requirement.Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
- Knowledge of ADA Titles I and II, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act;
- Evaluating and approving ADA requests for accommodations;
- Conducting ADA Grievance investigations and assisting in dispute resolution;
- Managing ADA audits; and/or
- Providing advice on the disability requirements of the Fair Housing Amendment Act and the Virginia Statewide Building Code.
This is a 40-hour per week Monday through Friday position, with occasional meetings in the evening 2 - 3 times per month.
