The Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) is seeking a dynamic leader to train peace officers at our NW Regional Academy in Arlington. This position coordinates and conducts Washington State's Basic Law Enforcement Academy (BLEA) programs. Specifically, this position serves as a lead trainer, delivering curriculum to ensure effective, efficient, and ethical training to the academy students. Duties assigned to this position include (but are not limited to):
- Facilitate instruction, including classroom, practical, and mock scenarios.
- Act as a lead TAC Officer of BLEA classes, sometimes multiple concurrent classes.
- Train and mentor students guided by WSCJTC policy, rules and regulations, and the agency's values.
- Model trustworthy behavior to support the ideal of officers who earn the trust of their communities.
- Reinforce and demonstrate ethical and professional behaviors.
- Maintain order within the academy atmosphere, including motivating classes as a group and students individually in accordance with agency policy.
- Support contracted TAC Officers in leading academy classes, as needed.
- Mentor and support onboarding part-time contractors, as requested.
- Support contracted TAC Officers with day-to-day questions, issues, and tasks by providing direct assistance, guidance, and instruction, as necessary.
- Communicate with students' employing agencies regarding performance, attendance, coordination of additional training needs, test failures, and remedial training, as needed.
- Positive time recording.
- Grade student exams and accurately report exam scores.
- Maintain class files.
- Maintain student attendance records.
- Track student injuries through communication with the student's employing agency and the BTD Commander, or their designee.
- Upon request by or with the assistance of the Quality Standards Division, act as a subject matter expert in updating curriculum.
- Upon request by or with the assistance of the Records Manager, act as a subject matter expert in identifying appropriate curriculum documentation for records request responses.
Required Qualifications /
Experience:
- At least five (5) years of experience in law enforcement in an assignment that may require the application of physical force.
- AND
- At least two (2) years of experience as a trainer of criminal justice personnel (law enforcement, corrections, juvenile corrections) specifically in the areas of de-escalation, patrol tactics, criminal law, criminal procedures, control/defensive tactics, less lethal weapons, firearms, and/or control/defensive tactics. Time may run concurrently.
- OR
- At least seven (7) years of experience in law enforcement in an assignment that may require the application of physical force
- AND
- At least two (2) years of lead or supervisory experience of criminal justice personnel (law enforcement, corrections, juvenile corrections). Serving as a lead trainer/primary coach/TAC Officer/FTO or PTO are acceptable. Time may run concurrently.
Preferred/Desired
Qualifications:
- Understanding of and/or experience with WSCJTC protocols and chain of command.
- First-level supervisor experience (examples: sergeant, supervisor, manager).
- WSCJTC Instructor Development - 2 (ID2) certification.
- Skills for basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Knowledge of training and instruction principles, content, and methodology.
- Knowledge of curriculum development.
- Demonstrable experience developing and utilizing resources appropriately.
