Machinist II

Karman Space & Defense is a leader in the rapid design, development, and production of critical, next-generation system solutions that align with the U.S. Department of War and its allies’ core mission priorities, and meet the accelerating demand for access to space. Building on nearly 50 years of success, we deliver Payload & Protection Systems, Aero/Hydrodynamic Interstage Systems, and Propulsion & Launch Systems to more than 80 prime contractors supporting over 130 space and defense programs.

This role is part of our Space and Launch business, which has contributed to the nation’s space programs for decades by delivering complete solutions from concept to flight. We enable successful space operations with mission‑critical technology supporting every step from first launch to final landing, including launch vehicle subsystems, propulsion systems, aerodynamic and interstage systems, and payload protection and deployment.

Our high-performance solutions are engineered to operate in the most extreme environments and meet precise mission requirements. In this role, you will set up and operate advanced 5‑axis Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines to produce complex, mission‑critical hardware made from difficult, high‑value materials. You will support low‑volume, high‑complexity work on one‑of‑one flight components, refine setups for new parts, and maintain tight dimensional accuracy by applying strong judgment, inspection skills, and collaboration with Engineering and Quality teams.

Responsibilities
  • Sets up and operates 5‑axis Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines to produce complex space and defense components.
  • Machines hard and exotic materials including Inconel, copper, and additively manufactured metals, selecting and adjusting speeds, feeds, tooling, and coolant strategies.
  • Runs single‑piece, high‑value flight hardware with careful verification and deliberate execution.
  • Develops and refines setups for new or unproven parts where established processes do not exist.
  • Ensures machined parts meet customer specifications, drawings, models, and standard template protocol (STP) files.
  • Demonstrates the ability to produce and maintain dimensional quality in a low‑volume, high‑complexity environment.
  • Monitors tool wear and cutting conditions closely, stopping the process when necessary rather than running to failure.
  • Utilizes blueprint reading skills, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), inspection skills, and related tools.
  • Communicates proactively with Engineering, Programming, and Quality when part, model, or process risks arise.
  • Performs general shop duties including deburring, in‑process inspection, packaging support, and maintaining equipment, tooling inventory, and a clean machining area.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Typically possesses 2–5 years of relevant experience with demonstrated ability to operate shop‑related tools and equipment.
  • Physical requirements include standing and walking for extended periods, occasional use of stairs, and lifting up to 40 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands‑on experience machining Inconel, titanium, copper, or other hard and exotic alloys.
  • Experience machining additively manufactured components.
  • Proficiency with 5‑axis and lathe setup and operation (Haas, Mazak Integrex, Fanuc controls).
  • Versatility and experience across multiple machine centers.
  • Ability to understand G and M code, read blueprints and GD&T, troubleshoot production issues, and use measuring and setup tools.
Physical Requirements
  • Standing and walking for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Occasional use of stairs.
  • Lifting up to 40 pounds. The essential functions of this position must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
