Position

Purpose:

Exemplifies and ensures strong customer service in all aspects of the job. Directs and controls the operation of the Front End in the absence of store management to achieve sales and profit objectives.

As the primary contact for customers, the Person In Charge (PIC) provides friendly, courteous and helpful service. During the absence of the Store Manager and the First & Second Assistant Managers, the PIC is in charge of the store, with analogous authority to make necessary decisions to operate the store at maximum profit, efficiency, and superior customer service. The PIC also acts as a Cashier‑Checker and may be required to work in many departments within the store.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
  • Provide customer service as defined by the employer within the scope of the position and company policy.
  • Handle emergencies, customer complaints, employee or customer accidents, and supervise all store personnel.
  • Maintain high familiarity with company policies and procedures.
  • Supervise the sales floor to monitor service and product replenishment.
  • Replace stock in displays surrounding the checkout area.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
  • Assist other cashiers with computer, register, and scanner problems.
  • Perform basic office functions to assist customers and personnel.
  • Operate electronic cash register to total customer bills.
  • Receive payment for purchases and return correct change.
  • Bag groceries in paper, canvas, or plastic bags, lift bags into the cart, and assist customers with carry‑out when a Courtesy Clerk is unavailable.
  • Complete close‑of‑day functions in the office, as required.
  • Count out‑of‑stock product, when necessary.
  • Count tills when other cashier‑checkers leave.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Related Qualifications
  • Follow company customer service procedures; demonstrate prior customer service skills or related experience.
  • Interact effectively with customers and co‑workers.
  • Understand and follow instructions.
  • Know all positions within the store.
  • Work independently.
  • Prior experience as a clerk or manager is desirable.
Supervisory Responsibilities

All store employees during the absence of the Store Director or Assistant Store Director.

Permits / Licenses

Varies depending on store location and state/county requirements.

Work Environment

Temperature extremes: N/A. Chemicals: mild detergents or glass cleaner.

Safety – Sensitive Position

Job responsibilities include tasks or duties that could affect the safety or health of the employee performing the task or others.

Union and Non‑Union Compensation & Benefits

The pay range is $17.38 to $25.40 per hour, but no less than the local minimum wage. Starting rates will vary based on location, experience, qualifications, and the terms of any applicable collective bargaining agreement. Benefits may include medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, sick pay (accrued based on hours worked), PTO/Vacation pay, paid holidays (8–9 days annually), bereavement pay, and retirement benefits (pension or 401(k) eligibility).

Quarterly bonus may be available to associates in this position.
