Position Summary

The Instructional Specialist I for the Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism Institute (HCAT) plays a vital role in advancing hospitality education at Anne Arundel Community College. This position is responsible for delivering high‑quality instruction across credit and noncredit courses, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, and supporting the Institute’s mission through academic advising, student mentoring, curriculum development, and leadership of special events.

As a key member of the HCAT team, the Instructional Specialist I contributes to the excellence and innovation that defines the program’s reputation.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver in‑person and online instruction each term for assigned hospitality courses, including credit, noncredit, open enrollment, and contract‑based offerings.
  • Prepare and maintain relevant course materials to support effective instruction and student learning.
  • Serve as lead instructor when assigned, overseeing course delivery and coordinating training with part‑time faculty to ensure alignment with HCAT standards.
  • Collaborate with HCAT operations to identify and fulfill product and equipment needs for instructional and event purposes.
  • Recommend and assist in the development of curriculum updates to ensure relevance and alignment with current standards.
  • Incorporate curriculum changes to maintain currency across courses and programs.
  • Integrate a variety of technologies into the delivery of assigned courses and instructional programs.
  • Participate in the development and monitoring of course and program outcome assessments, digital accessibility in course content and support resources, and curriculum reports.
  • Prepare and submit projects and all related reports in accordance with established deadlines and directives.
  • Support and implement designated program goals and objectives, as well as the college’s strategic initiatives within HCAT operations.
  • Participate in the development of assigned course budgets and maintain accountability for operating within the approved budget framework.
  • Attend all required departmental, divisional, and assigned association meetings as requested.
  • Lead front‑of‑house operations for HCAT special events, including completing banquet event orders (BEOs), procuring food and supplies, and managing event setup, execution, and post‑event cleanup.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the Assistant Director, Director, and/or Dean.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in hospitality management, business management, or related subject matter OR associate’s degree and Executive‑level industry certification.
  • Minimum of five years of food and hospitality industry experience.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience teaching credit, noncredit, or continuing education courses, preferably in a college environment.
  • Experience with mentoring and advising students.
  • Serv Safe Managers Certification or comparable food safety certification.
  • Experience with curriculum development and digital accessibility.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to interact effectively and tactfully with diverse populations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years of demonstrated experience in planning and executing special events.
  • Familiarity with microcomputer applications such as word processing, database management, or industry‑specific point‑of‑sales systems; knowledge of Microsoft Office required.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision with attention to details and deadlines.
