Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Parent Educator - Parents as Teachers

STATUS: Part‑time, approximately 19 hours per week;
Flexible schedule – some evenings & weekends may be required.

FLSA STATUS: Non‑exempt

REPORTS TO: Parents as Teachers Supervisor;
Director of Early Childhood Education

POSITION SUMMARY: To provide personal instruction, demonstrate appropriate educational activities, and deliver research‑based printed materials to parents regarding child development and related issues. To conduct child developmental screenings including, but not limited to, vision, hearing, the understanding and use of language, motor development, hand‑eye coordination, health, and physical development for children from birth through kindergarten entry.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Serve families in assigned caseload with face‑to‑face personal visits at a frequency dictated by supervisor.
  • Coordinate services with other community programs with similar purposes, make recommendations for further screenings, evaluations, etc.
  • Attend and enhance group connections and community events involving Parents as Teachers (health fairs, parent universities, speaking engagements, etc.).
  • Adhere to all district health, safety, and confidentiality policies.
  • Document and maintain visit records as required.
  • Conduct screenings for children from birth through kindergarten entry, provide related verbal review and written documentation.
  • Maintain permanent records as required by Parents as Teachers.
  • Actively recruit volunteer families to participate in the program.
  • Attend required certification training and become certified as a parent educator.
  • Attend required professional development.
  • Provide professional parent instruction and delivery of information to district families implementing the curriculum provided by the National Parents as Teachers (PAT) Center, along with enhancements from the district.
  • Coordinate services with other community programs with similar purposes.
  • Support and enhance the existing PAT program.
  • Represent the district at various community events supporting families and/or young children.
  • Support the value of education.
  • Support the philosophy and mission of the district.
  • Support the philosophy and mission of Parents as Teachers.
  • Attend training and become qualified to administer developmental and health screenings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or as needs arise.
  • Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
ESSENTIAL

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
  • Must meet one of the following criteria:
    • Certification and/or four‑year degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field
    • Associate degree or other certificate in Early Childhood Education or a related field
    • 60 College Credit Hours and 2 years DESE‑approved experience
    • High School Diploma (or equivalent) and 5 Years of DESE‑approved experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work with adults and their young children.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of telephone/email and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, and handle or feel objects. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, and repetitive motions. Requires ability to sit and stand for long periods to complete work.

Requires ability to handle multiple tasks with frequent interruptions and ability to work in noisy, stressful, and crowded environments, and to work in a variety of settings. The employee must independently transport him/herself to various locations in the District for various meetings, events, home visits, etc.
