POSITION TITLE: School Nurse Assistant

STATUS 180-Days;
Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Director of Nursing/Building Principal

POSITION SUMMARY: To provide the fullest possible educational opportunity for each district student by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the District Schools.

QUALIFICATIONS/

EDUCATION:

• High School diploma or equivalent
• Minimum 60 college credit hours
• Computer skills
• Clerical skills
• Ability to work with children and adults

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Gives care to students who are ill and administers first aid in accordance with first aid procedures. This includes notification of parents/guardians and the nurse when indicated. Maintains daily log of all students seen for health-related problems.
• Performs designated clerical duties associated with maintaining cumulative student health records. This may include recording information from physical examination forms, screening results, immunization dates, information from previous schools, and computer data entry.
• Assist students in securing required immunizations and physical examinations by mailing appropriate notices to parents/guardians as directed by the nurse.
• Perform other duties as designated by the nurse such as securing the return of borrowed health room supplies (clothing, elastic bandages, etc.), maintaining first aid kits and other supplies, changing thermometer solutions, recording changes on class lists, assisting in screening students, making ice bags, etc.
• Inform the principal, counselor, and nurse of suspected cases of child abuse, child neglect, drug abuse, or other serious matters which require immediate attention.
• Cooperate with school secretary in matters of school attendance.
• Implement policy on exclusion and re-admission of students with contagious disease as directed by the nurse.
• Dispense medications to students in accordance with school policy.
• Participate in training and workshops as appropriate.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
