Under the general supervision of a Department Manager, this part‑time position performs a variety of maintenance, ground keeping, and construction tasks in the City.
Overview- Type of position:
Part‑time (unbenefited) - Location:
Public Works Division - Salary: $29.22 per hour
- Work schedule:
Monday through Thursday, 5:30 am to 10:30 am
Essential functions include:
- Repairing and maintaining physical structures belonging to the City, cleaning and keeping buildings in good repair using hand tools and power tools.
- Replacing defective electrical switches and other fixtures; performing minor painting, plumbing, and carpentry tasks such as repairing woodwork, plumbing fixtures, plaster, and laying brick; building sheds and other outbuildings.
- Maintaining grounds and areas along street right‑of‑ways, repairing and painting benches, handrails, and tables.
- Inspecting streets, alleys, and sidewalks throughout the City.
- Cleaning grounds, removing litter, grooming recreational areas, spraying lawns, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides using hand or automatic sprayers.
- Raking and bagging or disposing of leaves.
- Watering lawn and shrubs using hoses or fixed/portable sprinkler systems.
- Repairing fences, gates, walls, and walkways with carpentry and masonry tools; painting fences and outbuildings.
- Performing ground maintenance duties with tractor‑equipped attachments (mowers, lime or fertilizer spreaders, lawn rollers).
- Cutting lawns with hand or power mowers; trimming and edging around walkways and walls using clippers, weed cutters, and edging tools.
- Pruning shrubs and trees to shape growth or remove damaged leaves, branches, or twigs with shears, pruners, or chain saws.
- Performing other maintenance and repair duties for City facilities as assigned.
- High school education or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of semi‑skilled to skilled experience in maintenance, general construction, and/or custodial work.
- Experience in a public works and maintenance environment is highly desirable.
- Valid California Driver’s License issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles and a good driving record.
- Safe driving practices.
- Basic knowledge of carpentry, electricity, and plumbing.
- Basic knowledge of lawn care and tree trimming.
- Maintain stamina over time.
- Manage time pressure and deadlines.
- Maintain attention and concentration for necessary periods.
- Apply common sense and carry out instructions (written, oral, or diagrammatic).
- Adapt to situations requiring precise attainment of set limits, tolerances, or standards.
- Perform simple and repetitive tasks.
- Ask questions or request assistance when needed.
- Perform routine, concrete, organized activities.
- Remember locations and work procedures.
- Make decisions based on simple sensory data.
- Perform activities on schedule.
- Maintain regular attendance and be punctual within specified tolerance.

- Recognize potential hazards and observe appropriate precautions.

- Perform physical activities such as bending, stooping, lifting, carrying, walking, squatting.
- Get in and out of vehicles without assistance.
- Lift objects weighing up to 60 pounds to waist height.
All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of a pre‑employment physical exam (including a drug/alcohol test), and a criminal background investigation involving fingerprinting. A felony or misdemeanor conviction may disqualify the applicant from City employment.
Probationary PeriodThe position has a 365‑day probationary period, as outlined in the employee handbook.
