Position Purpose
Specializes in traffic accident investigation and prevention by responding to a variety of motor vehicle related situations along with active traffic collision scenes to investigate the cause and enforce municipal ordinances and laws related to motor vehicles.
Essential Job Functions- Enforce city ordinances and regulations pertaining to parking of vehicles on public and private property.
- Issue appropriate warnings and citations to violators.
- Respond to traffic collisions, independently and with police officers, to conduct thorough investigations, evidence collection and analysis.
- Prepare written reports, forms and diagrams documenting the accident investigation both manually and electronically.
- Respond to traffic collisions of all kinds including hit‑and‑run, injuries, and fatalities.
- Provide traffic support at special events, accident scenes, or other events that require traffic direction.
- Retain organizational chain of custody paperwork for electronic filing submission.
- Serve summons, subpoenas and notices.
- Aid police officers, city staff, district attorney’s officers, other police departments and other government agencies with traffic related issues.
- Assist in preparation of material developed in investigations for presentation in court, testifying in civil and criminal court on behalf of the police department.
- Provide education to the community and others regarding traffic enforcement and accident prevention.
- Travel to and attend team and organizational meetings, training, events and activities and appropriately and professionally represent the department.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Strong knowledge of State of Colorado and city traffic laws.
- Knowledge of the criminal justice system and administrative procedures.
- Knowledge of investigative resources and computer databases such as CCIC, NCIC, DMV, Colorado Secretary of State, Homeland Security, State and County Court Databases, Social Security Administration, police databases and open‑source information.
- Proficient in office computer software, tools and equipment including word processing, publishing software, Records Management Systems, computer scanners, facsimile machines and printers.
- Command of English language with proper grammar and ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Ability to write detailed, concise, and accurate reports, memos, and letters.
- Ability to prepare narrative reports explaining investigative activity and findings and justifying prosecution of a case.
- Ability to work shifts, evenings, weekends, holidays and/or on‑call hours.
- Ability to obtain and maintain certifications and proficiency in all job‑related required areas including CPR, Precision Driving and NCIC/CCIC computer skills.
- Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing, to support organizational objectives and interact with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive and cooperative manner.
- Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
Experience in training or coursework related to traffic accident investigation and parking enforcement.
License & Certification- First Aid/CPR/AED.
- Valid Colorado driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
Associate’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Work ExperienceThree (3) years of experience in public sector, investigative, law enforcement or related field.
Other Qualifications- At least 21 years of age.
- Successfully pass polygraph, psychological exam, drug screen and an extensive background check.
Strenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50+ pounds) and may also use heavy tools or require strenuous application in awkward positions.
HazardsMarginal to moderate exposure to conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury.
Work EnvironmentRegular exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements.
