This posting is for the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) within the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC). The first opening will be located in Denver. This position will be required to work shift work. The posting is used to create an eligible list statewide and is open to Colorado state residents only.

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) enforces criminal law to detect and deter crime within the CDOC. Through the use of systematic investigative techniques, the position plans and conducts criminal and administrative investigations, and prepares legal documents, reports, warrants and affidavits.

• Conduct investigations of offender and employee misconduct to include violations of state statutes, federal laws and/or administrative regulations. Investigations may include Title VII discrimination and sexual harassment complaints, use of force allegations, staff and offender relationships, and other misconduct.
• Coordinate facility drug interdictions and provide supervision of assigned facility staff.
• Interview suspects, victims, witnesses, and confidential sources.
• Independently investigate crimes in a prison facility. As lead investigator or team leader, direct field investigations, determine resources, and assign tasks to other investigators and officers.
• Review findings, prepare investigative reports and legal documentation for presentation to appointing authorities and prosecuting agencies.
• Conduct surveillance and participate in undercover operations; assist other CDOC divisions as needed.
• Analyze complaints, determine authenticity, and identify essential elements that constitute a crime under Colorado statutes.
• Write search and arrest affidavits, obtain court orders, and secure warrants and related seizures.
• Inventory and secure items seized during searches and prepare exhibits for court proceedings.
• Testify in court and at administrative hearings; perform additional investigative tasks as required.

• You will work as a lead investigator, a support investigator, and as an independent investigator depending on the situation.
• Pass a law enforcement background investigation, integrity interview, and a psychological evaluation.
• On-call 24/7 to respond to correctional facilities statewide; must reside within 1 hour drive time to the selected location.
• Flexible schedule with travel as needed for emergencies or team operations.

Criminal Investigator IV

Experience: Eight (8) years of full-time professional investigative criminal case experience including felony drug investigations, felony assault investigations, and internal affairs investigations. This must include interviewing suspects, victims and witnesses; collecting and processing evidence; writing and executing warrants; and testifying. Part-time experience is pro-rated.
Or a combination of related education, apprenticeship, certification, and relevant investigative experience equal to eight (8) years.
