The Advanced Manufacturing Technician is a key member of the Barber-Nichols manufacturing team assisting in the implementation, integration, and operation of advanced manufacturing capabilities such as electrical discharge machining (EDM) and electro chemical machining (ECM). This is a hands‑on position operating advanced manufacturing equipment and will work closely with Manufacturing Engineering to produce prototype and production parts for Barber-Nichols customers and internal development efforts.
KeyResults Areas
1. Operate ECM machines to meet development and production schedules
- Provide input to and execute the production schedule for multiple ECM machines for successful creation of development and production hardware within the required delivery schedule.
- Independently learn and increase self‑proficiency on ECM machine operation through design and trial of new tooling and electrode concepts.
- Perform and coordinate machine maintenance and calibrations per defined equipment supplier interval and scope.
- Provide input to and execute the production schedule for EDM machines for successful creation of development and production hardware within the required delivery schedule.
- Independently learn and increase self‑proficiency on EDM machine operation through design and trial of new tooling and electrode concepts.
- Perform and coordinate machine maintenance and calibrations per defined equipment supplier interval and scope.
- Maintain process documentation that establishes operating procedures from start to finish including chemical procurement, chemical storage, chemical handling, electrolyte management, machine operation, profile measurement and post‑processing.
- Integrate continuous improvements and process efficiency within the manufacturing department.
- Foster responsive and positive environment in the face of often‑changing priorities and workload along with the ability to adapt to these changes.
- Collaborate with designers and manufacturing engineers to adapt current designs and provide feedback on new designs for improved ECM and EDM manufacturability, based on hands‑on experience.
- Maintain ECM and EDM tooling, supplies, and equipment in a clean and organized fashion to foster efficient and repeatable production.
To qualify for this position, an individual must possess the knowledge, training, experience and abilities required.
Education and Training- Formal or on‑the‑job exposure/training in a high aptitude manufacturing technology such as electrical discharge machining or related technology.
- Three years of experience in a high aptitude manufacturing environment such as electrical discharge machining or related technologies.
- Experience with precision assembly or setting up conventional metal machining equipment (lathes, mills, grinders) will be helpful.
