CDOC Part Time Registered Nurse; Nurse

Position Overview

This is a part‑time position located in Buena Vista, CO.

• Document patient information accurately and in a timely manner to support comprehensive inmate medical records.
• Provide standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines.
• Transcribe medical orders and reports at shift change.
• Maintain confidentiality.
• Provide physical care and treatments, administer medications, collaborate on treatment plans, employ infection control measures, provide crisis intervention, interview and triage inmates, and provide instruction to patients and staff.
• Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures.
• Ensure ordering and restocking of medications and supplies.
• Participate in restraining an inmate primarily for medical reasons, when required.
• Administer PO, IM, IV, SQ, SL medications to inmates in medication lines, infirmaries, specialized cell houses, and PRN.
• Observe and report the physical and emotional condition of inmates, including medication effectiveness during triage, sick line, and emergency situations.
• Perform physical and emotional assessments during triage and sick‑line emergencies employing basic nursing assessments and protocols.
• Promote safety and security of the clinical environment through observations and contraband control, including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control.
• Operate a variety of clinical equipment available in the assigned work unit.
• Be knowledgeable about all Life Safety policies and procedures applicable to the unit.
• Report violations of security or safety through the reporting process.
• Attend required training, including two‑day self‑defence training.
• Work any shift, weekends, and holidays as required.

• Current, valid license as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or a state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
• Complete work‑experience section of the application detailing relevant experience related to the position.

• Ability to treat inmate patients on a daily basis in a variety of settings.
• Commitment to patient confidentiality.
• Ability to respond to emergency situations involving inmates or medical issues.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written.
• Proficiency in reading, comprehending, and communicating in English.
• Excellent decision‑making and discernment skills.
• Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
• Capacity to work a variety of shifts on a full‑time basis.
• Ability to produce accessible documents and technical content following plain‑language guidelines.
• Self‑control, resilience, and ability to remain calm under stress.
• Observe and respond to high‑stakes interactions with inmates.
• Tolerate stress, confinement, and high‑risk environments.

• Correctional nursing experience.
• Charge nurse and/or supervisory experience.
• Acute care or long‑term nursing experience.

• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Possess a valid driver’s license; maintain a safe driving record.
• Have a high school diploma or GED.
• Have no felony convictions.
• Possess valid U.S. work authorization.
• Successfully complete defensive tactics training and pass required modules, including English reading comprehension, competency assessments, and written/practical defensive tactics exams.
• Demonstrate physical ability to perform defensive tactics, including lifting arm above head, controlled take‑down, striking with hands or baton, and resisting impact.
• Accept exposure to pepper spray during training and assignment.
• Be able to see and hear to monitor safety and security.
• Work in a range of conditions, including outdoors and in varying temperatures.
