Position: Lead & NON Lead Aquatic Invasive Species Monitoring Crew– 6060 Broadway, Denver, CO

Job Summary

Temporary position (9 months or less) paying $20.50-$21.50 per hour. Employment starts 04/06/2026 and concludes 11/06/2026. The role is part of the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Invasive Species Program.

Responsibilities

The position involves both aquatic nuisance species (ANS) surveys and support of rapid response efforts.

  • Conduct standardized monitoring for zebra mussels, quagga mussels, New Zealand mudsnails, and Eurasian watermilfoil, including infestation mapping and population monitoring.
  • Perform additional baseline mapping for aquatic plants, mollusks, crayfish, and other invertebrates.
  • Conduct water quality monitoring and detailed record‑keeping in accordance with state protocols.
  • Work independently or as part of a team, survey lakes, reservoirs, streams, and rivers.
  • Interact professionally with the public as representatives of the Invasive Species Program.
  • Travel Monday through Thursday each week, with significant overnight camping; attend occasional motel stays.
  • Assist the Early Detection & Rapid Response (EDRR) Specialist and Invasive Species Program Manager with rapid response efforts arising from monitoring data.

Lead Technician duties include leadership of a crew, decision making in the field, ensuring crew safety and adherence to protocols, managing equipment, and performing ArcGIS Field Maps data collection and quality control. Lead technicians may also produce maps, analysis, and technical reports.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 16 years of age or older.
  • Valid driver’s license required for operating a state vehicle and acceptable driving record.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, Google Suite).
  • Willingness to be flexible with weekday schedules.
  • Ability to travel extensively with overnight stays, including camping.
  • Ability to drive long hours and remain alert.
  • Experience working closely in small crews for long hours in a professional manner.
  • Comfortable working in and around water.
Preferred Qualifications
  • B.S. in natural resources or related field, or at least one year of completed coursework toward a degree.
  • Experience leading field crews, especially for the Lead Technician role.
  • Experience performing data entry.
  • Experience conducting biological field surveys, especially aquatics and/or water quality, including species identification.
  • Experience with zebra mussel, quagga mussel, New Zealand mudsnail, Eurasian watermilfoil, or other invasive species.
  • Experience boating and/or trailering, including knowledge of boat and trailer anatomy and operating in inclement weather.
  • Experience with ArcGIS software.
  • Excellent communication, organization, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize and multitask.
