About the Work Unit
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) operates and maintains the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel (EJMT). The Special Crew Unit maintains and repairs the tunnel’s 25,000‑volt electrical system, generators, circuit breakers, pumps, motors and ventilation fans.
About the PositionCDOT has three openings for a Tunnel Facilities Trade Worker I. This role assists with electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and ventilation work on the tunnel’s systems.
Responsibilities- Assist in maintaining, installing, repairing, and adjusting building heating systems, including hydronic, forced air, gas‑fired boiler, electric baseboard, and radiant heaters.
- Under direction of a licensed electrician, assist with electrical services on tunnel equipment such as substations, generators, compressors, transformers, high‑voltage switch gear, lighting, and elevators.
- Assist with water, sewage, potable water, and fire protection distribution systems.
- Assist with maintenance of 56 dual‑speed motors and 28 ventilation fans.
- Safely operate and maintain equipment including trucks, loaders, backhoes, graders, sweepers, wrecker, pumper, aerial device, forklift.
- Respond to vehicle fires using firefighting equipment and PPE.
- Participate in maintenance projects, inspect contractor work, and test installed equipment.
- Prepare work orders, cost estimates, and materials inventories.
- Attend safety meetings and training, including fire response and hazardous material training.
- Perform daily safety checks and maintain hazard awareness.
- Assist in snow plowing and traffic control during winter events.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Shift B schedule: 5:00 p.m.–5:30 a.m. Sunday & Monday; 9:00 p.m.–5:30 a.m. Tuesday & Wednesday.
- Exposure to loud noise, fumes, gases, dust, and extreme temperatures up to 12,000 ft elevation.
- Use of ladders, scissor lifts, and other elevated work.
- Required to wear mandatory protective gear.
- Persistent mandatory CDL Class A/B within 6 months of hire.
- On‑call and overtime may be required.
- At least 2 years of experience in electrical, HVAC, machinist, plumbing, or related trades.
- Or a combination of education and experience equal to 2 years (e.g., formal apprenticeship, trade education).
- Experience with the duties listed in the Responsibilities section.
- State service experience related to the position.
- Strong ethics, desire to learn, commitment to safety and teamwork.
- Proficiency with multiple trade tools and equipment.
- Basic computer skills.
- Must pass a pre‑employment screening (background, driving, education).
- Valid Colorado driver’s license required.
- Must obtain a Colorad~ Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no air‑brake restriction within 6 months.
- On‑call and shift work; essential service designation.
- Required to attend 2 weeks of maintenance training for new hires and 1 week yearly for veterans.
