CDOT has a vacancy for a Highway Maintenance Specialist in Berthoud Pass/ Winter Park, CO.

Total annual compensation for this position is $65,400 ($53,400 base pay and $12,000 housing stipend). Base pay for this position is $2,053.85 biweekly ($53,400 annually). This location is also eligible for an additional $1,000/month housing stipend. The annualized hourly rate for this position is $25.68/hour, with an overtime rate of $38.50/hour.

Description Of Job What You Will Do

No two days are exactly the same. Your daily activities change based on project needs, weather, environment, and road conditions. You will be on‑call on a rotating basis and may also respond to weather and other emergencies. You will typically work in a team environment, each patrol location having at least one lead specialist and multiple specialists.

  • Plow snow
  • Operate heavy equipment (tandem dump truck, loader, tractor–mower, etc.)
  • Mow grass and weeds
  • Remove debris from roadways, culverts, and tunnels
  • Shovel gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt
  • Dig ditches
  • Install and repair guardrail, highway markers and signs, warning signs, and lighting
  • Fill potholes and roadway cracks
  • Set out signs and cones for traffic control
  • Remove and cover graffiti
  • Install pavement markings/striping
  • Stop or slow traffic in emergency situations
  • Maintain equipment and perform minor repairs
  • Follow safety guidance and wear proper safety equipment

Your Work Environment
  • Exposure to loud noise
  • Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dust, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin
  • Mandatory use of protective equipment
  • Work with chemicals and cleaning products; some equipment requires respirators
  • Work near traffic, sometimes high‑speed traffic
  • Use ladders and scissor lifts for heights of approximately 10–20 ft
  • Required to drive CDOT vehicles
  • Frequent emergency response outside regular hours, may work overtime including weekends and holidays
