Highway Maintenance Specialist – Ft. Lupton, CO Applications are accepted from Colorado residents and non‑residents. The anticipated start date is July 13, 2026. A valid Colorado Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) without air‑brake restrictions is required. The role requires a passion for safety, travel, and hands‑on repair and improvements.
Compensation & BenefitsBase pay: $2,053.85 biweekly ($53,400 annually). The position includes an additional $1,000/month housing stipend, an annualized hourly rate of $25.67, and an overtime rate of $38.50. What You Will DoNo two days are the same. You will perform a variety of maintenance duties, respond to weather emergencies on a rotating on‑call schedule, and work within a team that includes lead specialists and support staff.
Your Main Job Activities- Plow snow
- Operate heavy equipment such as tandem dump trucks, loaders, and tractor mowers
- Maintain vegetation by mowing grass and weeds
- Remove debris from roadways, culverts, and tunnels
- Shovel gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt
- Dig ditches
- Install and repair guardrail, highway markers, signs, warning signs, and lighting
- Fill potholes and roadway cracks
- Set out signs and cones for traffic control
- Remove and cover graffiti
- Install pavement markings/striping
- Stop or slow traffic in emergencies
- Maintain equipment and perform minor repairs
- Follow safety guidance and wear appropriate safety equipment
- Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, gases, and dust
- Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators if required
- Work near traffic, sometimes high‑speed traffic
- Use of ladders and scissor lifts for heights of 10–20 feet
- Required to drive CDOT vehicles
- Frequent emergency response outside regular hours, including overtime and weekends
- Must be physically able to work in extreme temperatures, variable weather, and elevations up to 12,000 feet
- At least two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience
- Strong commitment to safety and continuous learning

- Experience with single and tandem axle dump trucks, loaders, bulldozers, backhoes, etc.
- Experience using hand tools
- Basic computer skills and adaptability to new software/equipment
- State service experience related to duties of this position
- Maintain a valid CDL Class A or B without air‑brake restriction for Colorado operations
- If holding a non‑Colorado CDL, must be eligible to drive in Colorado at hire; relocation requires CDL transfer within 30 days
- Pass a pre‑employment screening (SSN trace, criminal records, educational records, driving records) and may be required to pass a drug test and DOT physical
- On‑call and shift work, including rotating on‑call schedule and response to emergencies
- Essential Services designation: must respond promptly to emergencies and be available to work overtime, weekends, and holidays
- May need to live within thirty (30) minutes driving time of a response station; knowledge of emergency conditions may trigger a “report to workstation” notification
- New employees complete two weeks of maintenance training; veteran employees complete one week annually; training performed online or at Aurora location
- May be required to obtain a Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6 months–1 year as a condition of appointment
- Must provide a reachable telephone number for emergency response
