Highway Maintenance Specialist – Poudre Canyon

July 13, 2026.

Summary

CDOT is seeking a Highway Maintenance Specialist responsible for snow removal, equipment operation, roadway repairs, traffic safety, and maintenance activities along the Poudre Canyon corridor. The role requires a Colorado Class A or B CDL and a commitment to safety and teamwork on a rotating on‑call schedule.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plow snow and maintain roadway surface conditions.
  • Operate heavy equipment, including tandem dump trucks, loaders, tractors, mowers, and backhoes.
  • Mow grass and remove weeds along roadways, culverts, and tunnels.
  • Remove debris (rock, mud, animals, etc.) from roadways and structures.
  • Shovel gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt for road maintenance.
  • Dig ditches and install or repair guardrails, highway markers, signs and lighting.
  • Fill potholes and crack seal roadway surfaces.
  • Set out traffic control devices such as signs and cones for emergencies.
  • Remove graffiti and apply pavement markings/striping.
  • Operate traffic control measures to stop or slow traffic during emergencies.
  • Maintain and perform minor repairs on equipment.
  • Follow safety guidance and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

Compensation & Benefits

Base pay: $2,074.39 biweekly ($53,934 annually). Overtime: $38.89 per hour.

Work Environment
  • Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, dust, chemicals.
  • Use of protective equipment and respirators.
  • Work near traffic, including high‑speed traffic.
  • Use of ladders and scissor lifts (10–20 ft).
  • Drive CDOT vehicles.
  • On‑call and overtime, including weekends and holidays.
  • Work in extreme temperatures, variable weather, and elevations up to 12,000 ft.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with unrestricted air‑brake endorsement.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commitment to safety, learning, outdoor work, and teamwork.
  • Physical work ethic and adaptation to changing conditions.
  • Strong communication, customer service orientation, problem‑solving skills.
  • Experience operating dump trucks, loaders, bulldozers, backhoes, etc.
  • Experience with hand tools and basic computer skills.
  • State service experience related to duties of this position.
Conditions of Employment
  • Maintain an unrestricted CDL Class A or B in Colorado.
  • Pass pre‑employment screening (SOC, criminal, public court, education, driving records).
  • May require drug test and DOT physical.
  • On‑call, shift, essential services designation.
  • Must live within thirty minutes driving time of the work location.
  • Complete required maintenance training within 2 weeks of hire.
  • May need Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6–12 months.
  • Provide a reachable telephone number for emergencies.
