Highway Maintenance Specialist

Location:

South Fork, CO

Total annual compensation for this position is $53,934 ($53,934 base pay). Base pay is $2,074.39 biweekly ($53,934 annually). Annualized hourly rate $25.93, overtime $38.89.

What You Will Do

No two days are exactly the same. Your daily work varies with project needs, weather, environment, and road conditions. You will be on‑call on a rotating basis and may respond to weather or other emergencies. You will typically work in a team with a lead highway maintenance specialist.

  • Plow snow
  • Operate heavy equipment such as tandem dump truck, loader, tractor mower, etc.
  • Mow grass and weeds
  • Remove debris from roadways, culverts, and tunnels
  • Shovel gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt
  • Dig ditches
  • Install and repair guardrails, highway markers, signs, and lighting
  • Fill potholes and roadway cracks
  • Set out signs and cones for traffic control
  • Remove and cover graffiti
  • Install pavement markings/striping
  • Stop or slow traffic in emergency situations
  • Maintain equipment and perform minor repairs
  • Follow safety guidance and wear proper safety equipment

  • Full payment for CDL physical after the first year

Your Work Environment
  • Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, gases, dusts, and chemicals that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin
  • Work near traffic, sometimes high‑speed traffic
  • Use ladder and scissor lift heights of approximately 10–20 feet
  • Drive CDOT vehicles and respond to emergencies outside regular hours, including weekends and holidays
  • Work in extreme temperatures and at elevations up to 12,000 feet for long periods
Minimum Qualifications
  • At least two years of physical labor and/or heavy equipment operation experience

Conditions of Employment
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no air‑brake restriction allowed within Colorado
  • Non‑Colorado CDL holders must be eligible to drive in Colorado at hire; relocate and transfer within 30 days if moving
  • Must pass pre‑employment screening, including social security, criminal records, education, and driving records; may require drug test and DOT physical
  • On‑call and shift work; essential services designation with immediate response to emergencies
  • May be required to live within 30 minutes driving time of the work site
  • Require maintenance training (two weeks for new employees, one week annually for veterans in Aurora or via computer)
  • May need Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6 months to 1 year
  • Must respond to emergencies outside regular hours and provide a reachable telephone number
