Description Of Job About the Position

CDOT has a promotional opportunity for a Heavy Equipment Operator IV (HEO IV) located in Fairplay, CO. This position operates heavy, large, specialized roadway equipment with complex controls requiring a high degree of skill. This position is expected to serve as an expert in the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and transporting of heavy and specialized equipment. This position mentors others on safe equipment operation and maintenance.

duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following
  • Operate heavy equipment and specialized equipment in complex and safety sensitive situations. Equipment can include tandem dump truck, loader, tractor mower, tractor trailer combinations, triple-axle lowboy, paving machines, lay down machine, shoulder machine, attenuator, tow plow, aggregate spreaders, pneumatic and steel drum rollers, road oil distribution trucks, etc.
  • Ensure equipment is in safe operating condition to meet guidelines established by the Federal Motor Safety Carriers Act.
  • Operate technology systems in the equipment to help with operational decision‑making, inspections, and maintenance. Example systems include Truck and Equipment Controller Systems, Maintenance Decision Support Systems (MDSS), electronic fleet management systems, Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) System, etc.
  • Load, secure and haul heavy equipment; determine the weight and choose appropriate route; ensure yearly oversize and overweight permit is current and carried in truck.
  • Perform inspections of worksites such as access, utilities, permitted extra‑legal loads, roadway inventory, night inspections, and storm water permits.
  • Participate in completion of specialized tasks, such as chip seal, asphalt machine patching, asphalt crack pouring, etc.
  • Maintain knowledge and skill in operating hand tools, including learning new pieces/types of tools and related technology.
  • Perform minor repairs, equipment inspections, and schedule regular maintenance on all equipment this position operates.
  • Maintain situational awareness of patrol area conditions and identify maintenance issues.
  • Assess emergency situations to determine appropriate action to take.
  • Set up traffic control zones.
  • Perform roadway maintenance duties such as removing debris, digging ditches, installing and repairing guardrail, filling potholes, etc.
  • Plow snow.
  • Use computer software and CDOT programs to enter data and information in order to complete email, paperwork, reports, work orders, time sheets, supply orders, meter readings, weekly updates, on‑line training and accident reports.
  • Maintain proficiency in operations in three key areas: equipment maintenance, safety and environmental awareness, and effective operations.
  • Instruct, lead, coach, and mentor employees on specific projects or parts of projects, such as equipment operation, preventative maintenance, safety, environmental awareness, etc.
