Cost Accountant, Construction (Project Support)

Location: Ashburn, VA 20147
Reports to: Chief Financial Officer / Project Management
Shift: Monday through Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Job Summary

The Cost Accountant assists the company in meeting its objectives and goals by performing a full‑cycle accounting process as it relates to the pay application process for specific projects. This includes ensuring compliance with accounting principles, the Sarbanes‑Oxley Act and related federal/state laws, and the upstream contractual requirements.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Review, develop, and audit pay applications in accordance with upstream contractual requirements through communication with accounting and project operations.
  • Audit accounts payable invoices specific to project pay applications, vetting packing slips with vendor invoices for material purchases, and ensuring accuracy of quantities, unit pricing, and taxable vs. non‑taxable scenarios.
  • Audit payroll and collect payroll‑related data for the pay application process, including interpreting certified payroll reports.
  • Ensure all timesheets, time cards, and related reporting of time are accurate, approved, and processed correctly through time entry software.
  • Prepare and customize Excel reports and develop source documents for roll‑up Excel workbooks.
  • Timely and accurately develop the project pay application.
  • Maintain confidentiality of payroll information and ensure compliance with accounting principles and Sarbanes‑Oxley Act.
  • Work overtime when necessary to meet exceptional deadlines.
  • Hold a valid state driver’s license and meet fitness‑for‑duty and criminal‑background‑check requirements.
  • Work directly on construction projects; this is not a remote position.

Preferred

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or Construction Management.
  • 1–3 years of related professional cost‑accounting experience, preferably in construction.
  • General accounting fundamentals and concepts.
  • Strong understanding of accounting practices and procedures.
  • Advanced working knowledge of accounting system software.
  • Professional experience with certified payroll requirements and fringe benefits.
Computer Skills
  • Advanced end‑user of Microsoft Excel.
  • Proficient to advanced use of accounting platforms and Microsoft Access.
  • Proficient user of automated accounts payable platforms.

Physical Demands

The role requires regular sitting, seeing, talking, and hearing, use of hands, walking, reaching, and occasional lifting up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
