Position: Teacher, English Learner (Part-Time)

Job Overview

The Teacher plans, designs, implements, and assesses an appropriate instructional program in K–12 alternative education settings, with a primary focus on supporting English Learners. This role guides and encourages a diverse group of students—representing a wide range of linguistic, cultural, academic, and social‑emotional needs—to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The Teacher reports to the Elementary EL Supervisor or Secondary EL Supervisor, as appropriate, and works under the direction of the Director of English Learners.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Establish a safe and supportive environment that is conducive to learning and enables each student to demonstrate agency, ownership, and reflection.
  • Design and implement authentic and engaging learning experiences using the Virginia Standards of Learning, LCPS curriculum, and effective strategies to maximize student achievement.
  • Use a variety of resources and technology to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and problem‑solving.
  • Personalize instruction based upon the needs of students and manage time to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Assess student growth as related to educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
  • Adhere to LCPS Assessment and Grading policy and guidelines.
  • Analyze assessment data to inform instructional practices.
  • Collaborate with school administrators, EL supervisors, and instructional teams to prepare students for state and division‑wide assessments.
  • Communicate continuously with students and parents/guardians to inform them of progress toward instructional objectives.
  • Manage the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure a conducive learning environment; assist in managing student behavior throughout the school.
  • Plan instructional activities with other professional staff, both school‑ and non‑school‑based, to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Support colleagues, students, parents, and community stakeholders to promote student learning and mastery of content and competencies.
  • Participate actively in the Division of EL professional learning community, as appropriate, to deepen curriculum understanding and create assessments measuring lesson/unit mastery.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree (equivalent combinations of education and experience acceptable).
  • Holds or is eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional license with an endorsement in English as a Second Language.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of subject content, curriculum, and effective teaching methodology.
  • Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Skilled in using multi‑media and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Capability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong human relations.
Physical Requirements

Regular speaking, expressing or exchanging ideas verbally; conveying detailed or important spoken instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly; normal cognitive abilities including learning, recalling, and applying procedures and policies; frequently sitting or remaining stationary for long periods; occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and frequent or constant brief exertion for lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or moving objects.
