Job Overview

Teacher, American Sign Language. The teacher plans, designs, implements, and assesses instructional programs in a high school environment, guiding a diverse group of students to develop their academic potential. The teacher creates learning experiences, monitors progress, presents information to parents, develops assessments, establishes classroom expectations, collaborates with school administration to prepare students for assessments, and supports students outside the classroom.

• Establish a safe and supportive environment that encourages agency, ownership, and reflection.
• Design and implement authentic, engaging learning experiences using the Virginia Standards of Learning, LCPS curriculum, and effective strategies to maximize student achievement.
• Use a variety of resources and technology to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and problem solving.
• Personalize instruction based on student needs and manage time to maximize learning opportunities.
• Assess student growth relative to educational goals, objectives, and outcomes. Adhere to LCPS Assessment and Grading policies and guidelines.
• Analyze assessment data to refine teaching and learning experiences and inform instructional practices.
• Communicate with students and parents/guardians to keep them informed of progress toward instructional objectives.
• Manage student behavior in instructional settings and assist in managing behavior in other parts of the school.
• Plan instructional activities with other professional staff to maximize learning opportunities.
• Support colleagues, students, parents, and community stakeholders to promote student learning and mastery of content and competencies.
• Direct the work of teacher assistants, student teachers, and volunteers as needed.
• Participate actively in the school’s professional learning community to deepen understanding of curriculum, content, and competencies and to create assessments that measure mastery.

  Holds or is eligible for the Virginia Collegiate Professional License with an endorsement in American Sign Language

• Demonstrated knowledge of subject content, curriculum, and methodology of effective teaching.
• Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
• Skilled in the use of multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong human relations skills.

While performing duties, the employee will regularly engage in speaking and exchanging ideas orally, convey detailed instructions accurately and loudly, possess normal cognitive abilities, sit or remain stationary for prolonged periods, and occasionally lift or carry objects up to 25 pounds.
