Job Overview

The Teacher plans, designs, implements and assesses an instructional program in a high‑school environment that guides and encourages a diverse group of students at all levels to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The Teacher designs learning experiences, monitors student progress, presents information to parents, develops assessments, establishes classroom expectations, works with school administration to prepare students for a variety of assessments, and supports students outside the classroom such as in hallways, field trips, and after‑school activities.

At the high‑school level, the Teacher may teach students from ninth through twelfth grade, promoting a challenging, equitable, empowering, and developmentally responsive environment.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Establish a safe and supportive learning environment that enables each student to demonstrate agency, ownership, and reflection.
  • Design and implement authentic, engaging learning experiences using the Virginia Standards of Learning, LCPS curriculum, and instructional materials.
  • Use a variety of resources and technology to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and problem‑solving.
  • Personalize instruction based on students’ needs and manage time to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Assess student growth relative to educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
  • Adhere to LCPS assessment and grading policies and guidelines.
  • Analyze assessment data to refine teaching practices and inform instructional decisions.
  • Continuously communicate with students and parents/guardians to inform them of progress toward instructional objectives.
  • Manage student behavior in instructional settings, and assist with behavior management elsewhere in the school environment.
  • Plan instructional activities with professional staff, both school‑ and non‑school‑based, to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Support colleagues, students, parents, and community stakeholders to promote student learning and mastery of content.
  • Direct the work of teacher assistants, student teachers, and volunteers to create an effective learning environment.
  • Participate in the school’s professional learning community to deepen curriculum understanding and develop assessments that measure lesson or unit mastery.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
  • Hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in the appropriate subject area.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of subject content, curriculum, and effective teaching methodology.
  • Apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Use multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
  • Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication; excellent human relations skills.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly talks, expresses, or exchanges ideas through speech. The employee must be able to convey detailed or important instructions accurately, loudly, and quickly. They must possess normal cognitive abilities, be able to learn, recall, and apply policies, and frequently sit or remain in a stationary position for long periods. The employee may occasionally exert up to 25 pounds of force and regularly handle negligible amounts of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
