Job Overview

The Teacher plans, designs, implements and assesses an instructional program in a high school environment that guides and encourages a diverse student group at all levels to develop and fulfill their academic potential. The Teacher creates learning experiences, monitors progress, communicates information to parents, develops assessments, establishes classroom expectations, works with school administration to prepare students for assessments, and supports students outside the classroom, such as in hallways, field trips, and after-school activities.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Establish a safe and supportive environment that encourages agency, ownership, and reflection.
  • Design and implement authentic and engaging learning experiences using the Virginia Standards of Learning, LCPS curriculum, and effective strategies to maximize student achievement.
  • Use a variety of resources and technology to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and problem solving.
  • Personalize instruction based on students’ needs and manage time to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Assess student growth related to educational goals, objectives, and outcomes. Adhere to LCPS Assessment and Grading policy and guidelines.
  • Analyze assessment data to refine teaching and learning experiences and inform instructional practices.
  • Communicate continuously with students and parents/guardians to keep them informed of progress toward objectives.
  • Manage learner behavior in classroom settings and assist with behavior management in other school areas.
  • Plan instructional activities with other professional staff to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Support colleagues, students, parents, and community stakeholders to promote learning and mastery of content and competencies.
  • Direct the work of teacher assistants, student teachers, and volunteers to provide an effective learning environment.
  • Participate actively in the school’s professional learning community to deepen understanding of curriculum, content, and competencies, and to create assessments that measure lesson or unit mastery.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
  • Holds or is eligible for a Virginia teaching license in middle school with endorsement in the appropriate subject area.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of subject content, curriculum, and effective teaching methodology.
  • Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Skilled in the use of multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
  • Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication; excellent interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements

The employee regularly talks, expresses ideas, and uses the spoken word. Must convey detailed instructions clearly. Must have normal cognitive abilities and the ability to learn, recall, and apply practices and policies. Frequently sits or remains stationary for long periods. May exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push or pull objects.
