The Part
- Time English Learner (EL) Teacher at the Adult Detention Center provides individualized and small - group instruction to English Learners who are also identified for special education services. The teacher delivers standards - aligned, culturally responsive, and trauma - informed instruction within a secure facility, ensuring that students continue to make academic and language - development progress while in custody.
This role requires flexibility, strong collaboration skills, and the ability to build trust with learners in a highly structured environment.

- Establishes a safe and supportive environment that is conducive to learning and enables each student to demonstrate agency, ownership, and reflection.
- Designs and implements authentic and engaging learning experiences using the Virginia Standards of Learning, LCPS curriculum, and effective strategies to maximize student achievement using a variety of instructional materials.
- Creates a supportive and trauma - informed learning environment that promotes student engagement, agency, and respect within the secure facility.
- Differentiates and personalizes instruction based on language proficiency, IEP goals, academic history, and student needs.
- Assesses and monitors student progress using formal and informal measures, documenting growth in both language development and academic skills.
- Collaborates with detention center staff, special education teams, and LCPS personnel to coordinate services and ensure continuity of instruction.
- Implements effective behavior - support strategies aligned with detention center expectations and trauma - informed practices.
- Maintains accurate records and adhere to LCPS policies, including those related to assessment, grading, confidentiality, and special education compliance.
- Participates in professional learning and team planning to strengthen instructional practices and support student success across programs.
- May support other alternative locations as needed.

Experience:
Experience working with English Learners and students with disabilities
Licenses and
Certifications:
Holds or is eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional license with an endorsement in English as a Second Language
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge of subject content, curriculum, methodology of effective teaching
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs
- Skilled in the use of multi-media and computer technology to enhance learning
- Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents
- Ability to work effectively in a secure, highly structured environment
- Demonstrated skill in oral and written communications; excellent human relations skill
- Ability to travel between assigned work locations as needed to support operational requirements
