Building Automation Systems Lead Field Technician - Ashburn, VA About this position

Position Overview

Position Title: Lead Field Technician – Building Automation (IAD)

Position Location: Must live in IAD region (Virginia / Washington D.C. area)

JOB SUMMARY

The Lead Field Technician install and support building automation systems, lead installers, coordinate with programmers, and communicate project progress. The role provides technical support and leadership to plan, schedule, and execute the start‑up, installation, testing, commissioning, and close‑out of BAS/ HVAC controls projects in industrial, commercial, and mission‑critical technology sectors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Installation and Installation Coordination of BAS / HVAC Controls Systems (30%)
    • Direct and monitor subcontractors (onsite and offsite) including scheduling, resource management, and coordination of construction and start‑up services.
    • Install and wire BAS controllers and field devices, terminate low‑voltage cables, and organize job sites (material logistics, inventory, tools, security).
    • Provide technical information and safety guidance, lead installation teams during daily and weekly meetings, support change orders, cutover panels and systems in retrofit projects.
    • Develop Methods of Procedure (MOPs) for site activities and contribute to RFIs.
  • Startup, Commissioning and Closeout of BAS / HVAC Controls Systems (40%)
    • Assist software lead with pre‑functional and functional testing; troubleshoot BAS systems, including corrective actions.
    • Participate in commissioning efforts with external stakeholders, analyze system operation, and demonstrate operation to verify consistency with contracted scope.
    • Perform QA/QC of BAS and integrated systems using BAS software tools; provide installation inspections and close‑out duties to ensure customer acceptance.
    • Prepare markups for shop drawings to document as‑built conditions.
  • Reporting and Communication (20%)

    Project communication and reporting including daily site updates, safety reporting, progress reports, issue tracking, and coordination with subcontractors, project managers, clients, and commissioning agents.

  • Engineering Support and Business Development (10%)

    Provide input to project teams on estimating and take‑offs, attend bid walks, engineering surveys for retrofit projects, BAS audits, and related communication.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Intermediate level competency in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of HVAC, mechanical and electrical systems and materials.
  • Knowledge of controls wiring, relay logic, and associated materials.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Exceptional organizational skills for file management and multiple task coordination.
  • Ability to interpret architectural drawings, shop drawings, wiring diagrams, standards documentation, and product data sheets.
  • Safety compliance and ability to follow company and site safety requirements.
  • Effective communication skills, oral and written, including client interaction.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and plan and delegate work.
  • Certification in NFPA
    70E and/or OSHA training as required.
  • Physical capability to handle job responsibilities (lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing stairs/ladders).
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction, or related discipline, OR
  • Two years of hands‑on installation, testing, validation, and troubleshooting of controls infrastructure, PLUS
  • Minimum of five additional years of experience in installation, testing, validation, and troubleshooting of controls infrastructure.
