Data Center Facility Manager role acts as Amazon’s front line when it comes to hands‑on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting. The role involves maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting mission‑critical data center facility equipment including electrical support equipment such as stand‑by diesel generators and related fuel systems, three‑phase electrical systems that include switch gear, UPS units, PDUs, and wet‑cell batteries, and associated systems. Mechanical equipment includes CRAC units, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, water chemical systems, air handlers, pumps, motors, and additional equipment such as fire suppression systems, building automation systems, and general facilities equipment.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. They support all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that keep the cloud running. You’ll collaborate with a diverse team of engineers, supply‑chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and others to deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing unlimited capacity at the lowest possible cost for customers.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Oversee all aspects of the data center’s critical physical infrastructure, ensuring high‑quality work without impacting internal or external customers.
  • Manage teams of 24/7 engineering technicians in all facets of their career growth.
  • Engage in improvement projects, often coordinating with multiple support teams, and drive them from conception to completion.
  • Coordinate daily with a multitude of third‑party vendors to ensure adherence to contracted SLAs.
  • Manage the operations budget and expenditures effectively and efficiently.
  • Serve as the after‑hour on‑call Data Center Facility Manager, responding to any issues, and managing investigation, mitigation, and recovery.

A day in the life:
The Data Center Facility Manager will oversee operations and manage technicians responsible for routine and emergency services on critical systems such as switch gear, generators, UPS systems, power distribution equipment, chillers, cooling towers, computer‑room air handlers, building monitoring systems, and more. They will maintain high reliability and performance while keeping operating costs at a minimum, supporting mission‑critical servers with better than 99.999 % uptime.

Basic

Qualifications
  • High school or equivalent diploma.
  • 4+ years of management experience with five or more direct reports.
  • 5+ years of relevant work in a data center or other critical environment, or 3+ years of electrical or mechanical engineering experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems involved in critical data center operations (feeders, transformers, generators, switch gear, UPS systems, ATS units, PDU units, chillers, pumps, air‑handling units, and CRAC units).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Engineering Technology, or 5+ years of experience in a data center or mission‑critical environment with an emphasis on building and equipment operation.
  • Experience communicating technical details verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in an environment that involves walking, stooping, bending, and climbing to access equipment.
  • Experience conducting interviews and making effective hiring decisions.
