Position: Substitute Nurse and Health Clinic Staff

Job Overview

In accordance with Virginia School Health Guidelines, Student Health Services provides care to ill and injured students, administers medication, performs vision and hearing screenings, trains school personnel to safely care for students with medical concerns, and reviews physicals and immunizations for school entrance. Health Office personnel manage the day‑to‑day care of students with health concerns, maintain information about the health and medical needs of all students, communicate with parents and staff, and encourage good hygiene practices.

Substitute Nurses support the health clinic office or school nurse.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Render limited first aid; check temperatures; contact parents and school personnel as necessary regarding medical issues.
  • Administer routine prescription and non‑prescription medicines, as well as emergency medication to prevent anaphylaxis, per the school district’s medication policy and document appropriately in the computer.
  • Manage daily care of students with chronic medical concerns according to the individualized health care plans.
  • Document student clinic visits and care provided daily on the computer; initiate and complete injury/incident reports as required.
  • Maintain an organized clinic with necessary items to provide routine first aid and respond to emergencies.
  • May perform state-mandated screenings and prepare reports.
  • Provide direct nursing service for routine and emergency situations and prepare and maintain medical records.
  • Apply considerable judgment and interpretation in unusual or nonstandard situations.
  • Confere with and advise school administrators regarding student health issues, including student medical concerns, parent medical concerns, health emergency procedures, and special education needs.
  • Collaborate with parents, medical providers, and LCPS staff to manage health issues safely and appropriately at school.
  • Perform related work as required.
Qualifications Education/Certification
  • Current Virginia or Compact license as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Current BLS CPR/AED.
Experience
  • Prior health care‑related experience will be evaluated to determine applicable substitute placement.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge and practice of standard first aid and basic health practices.
  • Knowledge of basic computer and data entry skills.
  • Ability to deal effectively with students requiring health assistance; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to work cooperatively with others; knowledge of nursing and health care practices as applied to children and youth.
  • Ability to provide effective nursing and related health services for students, to keep abreast of medical practices in the field, to deal effectively with students requiring health assistance, to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to follow oral and written directives and communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents in English.
Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing, or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, conveying detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities, including the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time.

Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

Organizational Relationship

The health offices of High School, Middle School, and Title 1 Elementary Schools are each staffed by a full‑time RN.

Terms of Employment

Substitutes are employed on an at‑will basis and are not considered contractual employees.

Substitute Compensation
  • The pay rate is dependent upon the substitute assignment.
