About the roleOpen Chemistry is a collaborative research group whose mission is to produce and distribute small‑molecule research tools to enable discovery science worldwide. You will support this vision by designing and synthesising fluorescent dyes and other small‑molecule tools for biological research.
What you’ll do- Carry out multistep syntheses of organic molecules, including reaction set‑up, work‑up, purification, and analysis of products.
- Work with biochemical samples such as DNA, RNA, or protein samples for experimental purposes.
- Collect, record, organise and verify data in a laboratory notebook.
- Use software applications to assemble, format data and perform statistical analysis for eventual publication.
- Analyse data, formulate conclusions and create appropriate statistical presentations, including graphs and charts.
- Prepare progress reports regarding studies.
- Prepare, aliquot and maintain dye stocks for distribution worldwide as part of HHMI’s commitment to open science.
- Interact energetically with other Janelia scientists to initiate collaborative projects involving molecular research tools.
- Configure, operate and maintain laboratory apparatus and instruments.
- Order chemicals, reagents and other laboratory supplies as needed.
- Participate in laboratory meetings and planning sessions.
- Conduct literature reviews applicable to research areas.
- A bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related field.
- Completion of a college‑level organic chemistry course and laboratory.
- Undergraduate research experience in chemistry or a related discipline (preferred).
- Experience with multi‑step organic synthesis (preferred).
- Strong initiative, self‑motivation and capacity for creative problem‑solving.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational, time‑management and record‑keeping skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Remain in a seated or standing position for extended periods.
- Reach and grasp objects with hands or arms.
- Manipulate objects with fingers (e.g., keyboard).
- Communicate using spoken word.
- See and hear within normal parameters.
- Move around workspace and handle materials weighing up to several pounds.
- May be exposed to malodorous vapors, low‑dose radiation, toxic chemicals, acids or carcinogenic substances.
- Tech I: $18.40 – $29.93 hourly
- Tech II: $45,760 – $74,360 annually
