Role Overview

The Research Technician – Virology will support the Viral Tools team by providing multiple viral tool packaging services, including AAV, lenti, rabies, and baculovirus, to researchers within Janelia and to the broader HHMI scientific community.

Responsibilities
  • Produce AAV, lenti, rabies, and baculovirus using BSL2 cell culture and molecular biology techniques.
  • Work closely with management to schedule production requests and report status updates.
  • Maintain cell lines and monitor for bacterial and mycoplasma contamination.
  • Perform quality control assays such as digital PCR, qPCR, FACS, infectious titer assays, and western blots.
  • Understand and appropriately handle each virus system.
  • Keep detailed records and track multiple samples.
  • Work weekends, holidays, and after‑hours as required to meet operational needs.
  • Assist the Viral Tools team with general laboratory maintenance and unrelated duties when needed.
Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in molecular or cellular biology, or related field, or equivalent education with at least 2 years of research experience.
  • Advanced skills in BSL2 cell culture techniques.
  • Advanced skills in molecular biology.
  • Strong ability to manage multiple tasks and organize daily duties.
  • Ability to follow SOPs, exercise good judgment, minimize human error, and work efficiently.
  • Understanding of multiple virus systems and capability to handle them properly.
  • Prior hands‑on experience in a virology field is preferred.
Physical Requirements

The position requires remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods, reaching and grasping, dexterity to manipulate objects, communication skills, and the ability to see and hear within normal ranges. Employees must be able to move materials up to several pounds and may be exposed to malodorous vapors, low‑dose radiation, toxins, chemicals, acids, or other hazardous substances.
