Responsibilities
Responsible for performing a variety of general law enforcement duties related to the safety, detention, and security of prisoners during an assigned shift. Considerable tact and firmness are required when dealing with violent, suicidal, and mentally disturbed inmates. The employee must exercise alertness and independent judgment in unusual situations. Work is performed in accordance with established detention center management policies and procedures and may be supplemented by specific instructions as needed.
The employee is subject to the usual hazards of detention center management work and works under the close supervision of the Detention Center Major, with performance evaluated through conferences, record reviews, and inspections.
- Graduation from high school, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Good moral character and must pass a background check, psychological evaluation, physical exam, and drug screen.
- Detention officers working alone, without direct supervision, must be certified through the North Carolina Human Resources Division of Facilities Services within a year after employment.
